Good Tuesday Morning to You!

Courage. How do you define it? Being brave? Gutsy? Willing to try? Merriam-Webster says courage is “mental or moral strength to venture, persevere, and withstand danger, fear, or difficulty.” Sometimes, courage serves us well. Sometimes, not so much.

I have long felt there is a reason why humans don’t have wings. We are not supposed to fly. If we were, we would be shaped much differently. But that hasn’t stopped people from trying to find ways to fly for decades. And, as such, that hasn’t stopped people from dying while trying to find ways to fly for decades.

Courage?

Every year, we read stories about people who hike into desolate areas of mountains only to be stranded and die. We, as humans, are not built to survive in cold temperatures for extended periods of time. Yet, people keep hiking into these areas. And people keep dying.

Courage?

Humans don’t have fins or gills or other necessary features to be able to survive under water. Sharks do, and they see us as being in their feeding ground. Yet, we act surprised — and even angry — when we learn of humans being attacked by sharks. And despite the serious injuries and deaths, we keep venturing into the ocean.

Courage?

This brings me to the tragic deaths last week of the five passengers of a 22-foot submersible known as the Titan. Each passenger reportedly paid $250,000 for the trip to see the wreckage of the Titanic. They were certainly aware of the potential dangers. Twenty-eight people apparently made the trip to see the Titanic wreckage last year. Maybe these prior successes made them feel safe. It turned out to be a quarter-million-dollar underwater death trap. Clearly, we shouldn’t judge, and we should have compassion for the families of those who died, but one has to wonder what drives a person to take such risks.

Courage?

Maybe with the “venture” part of the definition but, unfortunately, not with the “persevere.”

Have a thought-provoking Tuesday, and thanks for reading.

Diplomacy at work. India is lifting tariffs on U.S. apples, walnuts and almonds. All are major exporters for U.S. growers. After the tariffs (70%) were enacted, in retaliation for U.S. tariffs on Indian steel and aluminum, India was the U.S. growers' second market for apples. That shrunk to zero sales.

Iowa is the only state where walnuts are harvested in every county. Yet Illinois produces far more. Still, walnut pie should be considered for Iowa's official pie, if Iowa ever gets around to naming official foods of any kind, as all of its neighbors do, to great tourism benefits.

Taco Tuesday is a big deal in Des Moines. My favorite deal is at La Familia (1610 6th Ave., Des Moines), where all tacos are at least $1 off. But that's because that is my favorite taqueria any day. Malo, Baja, Taco John's, El Guapo and Fresko all have good Tuesday bargains.

On June 27 in history ...

1950. President Truman orders U.S. forces to Korea. On June 27, 1950, President Harry S. Truman announces that he is ordering U.S. air and naval forces to South Korea to aid the democratic nation in repulsing an invasion by communist North Korea. The United States was undertaking the major military operation, he explained, to enforce a United Nations resolution calling for an end to hostilities, and to stem the spread of communism in Asia. In addition to ordering U.S. forces to Korea, Truman also deployed the U.S. 7th Fleet to Formosa (Taiwan) to guard against invasion by communist China and ordered an acceleration of military aid to French forces fighting communist guerrillas in Vietnam.

Meet Myles Finn

Music has the power to change students’ lives.

By Becky Kolosik

If you’re on TikTok, you might know a “famous” Indianola High School vocal teacher/director. Or, maybe you’ve seen the shiny sequined jackets he wears at show choir concerts. His name is Myles Finn, and he knows better than anyone about how the power of music has the ability to change someone’s life.

At Manchester High School, Finn not only played football, golf and basketball, but he also sang in choir and performed in musicals. At Wartburg College, he chose business as his major, and had a music scholarship that required him to sing in at least one ensemble.
“I was in the Wartburg Choir under the direction of Dr. Lee Nelson,” he says, smiling.

“Dr. Nelson and the program absolutely changed my life and showed me that I wanted to pursue music further.”
