Good morning to you!

Welcome to the Friday mailbag where you will find some of the comments, questions and ideas sent recently by readers of this newsletter or our publications. They are edited for space and clarity.

“I am old enough that my drivers ed car was a stick shift (The stick shift, March 9, 2026). That did me a favor later. If you couldn't drive the family pickup, you probably didn't go! And God bless the big red old Dodge 4x4, 4-on-the-floor pickup we put our daughter in when she was in high school. It turned out to be both a conversation piece and a good thing. The high school parking lot was known as scratch and ding anyway. She would come home to say someone (or two) had hit the Dodge, but it always got the best end of the deal. Leaving the Dodge at home, her college years is where the Ol-Red adventures paid off. Not a lot of her fellow students were familiar with stick shifts, never mind a 4-on-the-floor!” - Diane

Everyone needs an Ol-Red. - Shane

“My parents had a VW Bug, and that was how I figured out how to drive a stick shift (The stick shift, March 9, 2026). But once I learned, it was fun taking it out on abandoned lots and other two-wheel trails for a spin (or two). Owned three or four VW Bugs after that. They were always fun.” - Nathan

I love it. Think small. - Shane

“If you were a young kid in the mid 1960s, you might still use, ‘Same Bat-time, Same Bat-channel’ from the campy Batman TV series (TV catch phrases, March 10, 2026).” - Mike

I most certainly do. And you may recall Robin’s quote: “Holy Headlines, do we look like page one dumbbells!” - Shane

“Hi, Shane. I just read your column about catch phrases, and while I can't think of any quickly off the top of my head, I have been saying all of the ones you referenced around my office today, to the annoyance of my coworkers (TV catch phrases, March 10, 2026). Keep up the great work!” - Kim

Glad to help. - Shane

“Here are a few (TV catch phrases, March 10, 2026): ‘Silver Bullet’ from ‘The Lone Ranger.’ ‘Me, too, Kemosabe’ also from ‘The Lone Ranger.’ ‘Whoa Nellybelle’ from ‘The Roy Rogers Show.’ ‘Straight Arrow’ from ‘Sky King.’ ” - Bill

Clearly, someone has been watching a lot of Westerns. - Shane

“Good evening, Shane. How about ‘Good afternoon, everybody’ as Norm entered Cheers (TV catch phrases, March 10, 2026)?” - John

Oh, yes, and one of my favorite quotes from Norm: “It's a dog-eat-dog world, and I'm wearing Milk-Bone underwear.” - Shane

Have a fantastic Friday, and thanks for reading.

Pictured: Eel at Masao

The Japanese have been trying to raise eels domestically since the 1800s. Scientists and farmers have never been able to breed an eel, so this species' agriculture relies heavily on their catch in their elver stage. They are a huge part of the Japanese diet. They used to be popular in Spain but European species are endangered. In Des Moines, they are sold in sushi joints and frozen at C Fresh Market.

A 'FUR-EVER' HOME
Residents share stories about the animals they rescued.

By Rachel Harrington

Abandoned. Abused. Neglected.

The world is full of animals — big and small — that don’t know the comfort of a full belly, a warm place to sleep, and the love of a caring owner. Some people seek out these needy animals when looking to add a pet to their family. Others come across them unexpectedly and are moved to rescue them. Whatever the case, rescued pets often give their humans as much love as they receive.

A tough beginning
Tom Koehler has long been a friend of horses. When he moved to Winterset, he opened Blue Horse Enterprises. Koehler participated in dressage (an equestrian sport that judges how well the horse works with its rider) for many years, and he has rescued four horses. Each one had a different background. A taught a couple of them dressage and rode on a regular basis. He brought home his most recent rescue, Rowdy, after a trip his wife took to Missouri. ...
