Good morning to you!

Welcome to an extra edition of the mailbag where you will find some of the comments, questions and ideas sent recently by readers of this newsletter or our publications. They are edited for space and clarity.

“I learned manual transmission driving with some early 1960s vintage trucks the landscaping company I worked for in 1968 had (The stick shift, March 9, 2026). I had to learn because the employees imported from South Carolina did not drive at all. I embarrassed my oldest daughter by driving her Mustang GT's manual transmission timidly one evening. I was not projecting the bad-ass image she had cultivated.” - John

I would like to meet your daughter. - Shane

“Shane, It has been at least 15 years since I drove a manual transmission on a car/truck (The stick shift, March 9, 2026). Now I am trying to think of who I know with a manual transmission that will let me borrow it for a joy ride. I do love the feeling of using both legs and both arms to drive. Thank you for stirring some old memories!” - Kris

Shaken, not stirred. - Shane

“Wonderful column on driving (or learning to drive) with manual transmissions (The stick shift, March 9, 2026). I started that way, too, in a 1953 Plymouth 4-door sedan with no chrome, black wall tires and no radio. I’d bet if I tried to start up and drive a ‘stick shift’ right now, I’d ‘kill’ the engine!” - Chuck

That makes two of us. - Shane

“Ah, stick shifts. Loved them (The stick shift, March 9, 2026). I owned two VW Beetles and tooled around with my four forward shift speeds. Loved it. And loved the control of the clutch, hovering up a hill, while waiting at a stoplight to be able to release the clutch the whole way. Plus the motor was so simple, I could identify all the parts — I remember when I learned what a cam shaft was. I was superwoman.” - Margaret

Settle down, Margaret. You are scaring me. - Shane

“I used to sell cars, and I had a young man come in who could only afford a manual transmission PT Cruiser (The stick shift, March 9, 2026). Guess who had to teach him how to drive a manual before he pulled it off the lot? Thanks again for starting my morning off with some great memories.” - Rhonda

Sounds like you could teach a few more folks how to drive stick shifts. - Shane

Have a thoughtful Thursday, and thanks for reading.

A 'FUR-EVER' HOME
Residents share stories about the animals they rescued.

By Ashley Rullestad

Abandoned. Abused. Neglected.

The world is full of animals — big and small — that don’t know the comfort of a full belly, a warm place to sleep, and the love of a caring owner. Some people seek out these needy animals when looking to add a pet to their family. Others come across them unexpectedly and are moved to rescue them. Whatever the case, rescued pets often give their humans as much love as they receive.

“We've always been a pet family,” Eliza says. “My husband, Robert, and I both grew up with pets; I grew up with dogs and cats, and Robert grew up with lots of outdoor cats. We're originally from Indiana and moved to central Iowa shortly after completing our graduate training.” ...

FROM ESPN: Miami (Ohio) downs SMU in First Four. Miami (Ohio) found itself in a unique position Wednesday night at the First Four. The RedHawks had been a polarizing 30-win team in the lead-up to NCAA tournament selections. Was Miami good, or just a product of a weak schedule? Were all the major conference teams that avoided the RedHawks being silly or smart? After a 31-1 start, Miami made the NCAA field, but just barely as an at-large, and would tip off in the First Four, just 40 miles from its campus in Oxford, Ohio. ... READ MORE

Bush announced in a televised address, “At this hour, American and coalition forces are in the early stages of military operations to disarm Iraq, to free its people and to defend the world from grave danger.” President Bush and his advisors built much of their case for war on the specious claim that Iraq, under dictator Saddam Hussein, possessed or was in the process of building weapons of mass destruction.… READ MORE
