Good morning to you!

I went digging through a cabinet in our family room the other day, and I found a remote control. Not just any remote. A mystery remote.

I pulled it out, gave it a good look, turned it over in my hands like I was some kind of low-budget detective, and immediately asked myself an important question: What in this house does this even belong to?

Here’s the thing — I’m not missing a remote. At least, not that I’m aware of. In fact, every time I sit down to watch TV, I have too many remotes. I have a TV remote, a soundbar remote, a streaming remote, and at least one remote that I’m afraid to touch because I don’t know what it controls, and I don’t want to find out the hard way. And yet, here we are.

This one looked perfectly functional. Black plastic. Volume buttons. Channel controls. A full lineup of mysterious buttons that probably do something very important. The battery compartment? Clean. No corrosion. This remote had its life together more than I do.

Naturally, I tried to identify it. It looked like a TV remote, but it could have been for a stereo. Or a DVD player. Or, for all I know, a VCR — which would mean this remote is not only lost but also emotionally stuck in 2003.

I checked the brand name. Didn’t match a single electronic device in the house. Not one.

At this point, the questions started piling up. Why do I have this? Where did it come from? How long has it been here… watching… waiting? Is it possible this belongs to someone else? Did a guest accidentally leave it behind? Did it just… appear? Do remotes migrate like birds?

Then I started spiraling into more realistic explanations. Maybe it’s from a device we used to own. Maybe it belongs to one of the kids. Maybe it goes to a TV of theirs we stored years ago and forgot existed. Maybe — and this feels most likely — I once spent three straight hours digging through couch cushions looking for this exact remote, failed to find it, got mad, and bought a replacement.

After a thorough investigation — and by “thorough,” I mean standing in the middle of the room holding the remote and staring into space — I reached a conclusion. There was only one logical thing to do.

I put it back in the drawer.

Have a wonderful Wednesday, and thank you for reading.

Woebegone Wednesday
Steak has been the preferred meal of man since Neanderthal times. Cave paintings in France and Spain depict humanity's predecessors hunting and cooking aurochs, cow's predecessor, over open fire. The last bull aurochs died in Poland in 1620. The last female followed him seven years later. Look for the new Relish in this month's CITYVIEW. It features the ins and outs of America's favorite dinner option: steak. Pictured is steak at Ruth's Chris Steak House.

The CEO of Omaha Steaks recently told Fox Business' Maria Bartiromo that $10 a pound hamburger is coming soon.

A 'FUR-EVER' HOME
Residents share stories about the animals they rescued.

By Rachel Harrington

Abandoned. Abused. Neglected.

The world is full of animals — big and small — that don’t know the comfort of a full belly, a warm place to sleep, and the love of a caring owner. Some people seek out these needy animals when looking to add a pet to their family. Others come across them unexpectedly and are moved to rescue them. Whatever the case, rescued pets often give their humans as much love as they receive.

Adjusting to a loving home
After losing one of her American Eskimo dots that she adopted 11 years ago, Nancy Clemenson decided she wanted to fill the empty void her furry friend had left in her life. She had rescued a dog she called Pixie several years before, so she was acquainted with shelters from a personal perspective and liked the idea of adopting a dog from one. She also knew about them as a volunteer. ...
