Good morning to you!

Welcome to the Friday mailbag where you will find some of the comments, questions and ideas sent recently by readers of this newsletter or our publications. They are edited for space and clarity.

“Good morning, Shane. I'm more of a sci fi monster movie guy (Monster movie villains, March 4, 2026). I was terrified by the work of Ray Harryhausen (‘Earth vs the Flying Saucers’) and the talents from Japan who gave us ‘Godzilla.’ The quality of the special effects they produced were blown off the screen by the first glimpse of the dinosaurs in ‘Jurassic Park.’ The morning after seeing ‘Rodan’ for the first time, I would not come down from my top bunk until my bladder could stand no more. Certain giant ants were waiting for all three of us boys to be on the floor before they launched an attack.” - John

I spent many summer afternoons at our local movie theater watching those Godzilla movies. If given the opportunity, I still would. - Shane

“Shane, in adding up all of the different vehicles I have driven/ ridden over the years, including bicycles, motorcycles, cars and trucks, I came up with 10 vehicles in which each had a different transmission (The stick shift, March 9, 2026). From a 2-speed bike to a 13-speed semi, they all were challenging at first but then became fun.” - James

Now, that’s what I call a paradigm shift. - Shane

“1949 Ford F-2 (3/4 ton) pickup with a 4 speed manual transmission (The stick shift, March 9, 2026). I learned in the wide open spaces of the farm at 10 years old. The experience with manual transmissions came in handy after I was drafted into the Army. My duty station was about 90 miles from the main Army base. I rode the Army bus back and forth in the morning and evening. I quickly got to know the guy who had a Porsche and, of course, his trip was much faster than the Army bus, so I started riding back and forth with him. After many trips, he asked me if I knew how to drive a stick shift. Of course, I did — and being a car guy, I really wanted to drive a Porsche. A major part of the 90 miles was a twisty, hilly road, so I had lots of fun driving and shifting on that part of the road in a car that would take corners at speeds that were twice as fast as anything I had ever driven.” - George

That sounds like more fun than driving a 1949 Ford F-2. - Shane

“I thought I would always drive a manual transmission (The stick shift, March 9, 2026). I learned the skill by driving my stepfather’s car, nicknamed Suspense, because you never knew what might fall off — like the rearview mirror one time. I’m going to say it was a 1966 Chevelle. Gears were high-forward, down-forward, then high-back. Reverse was down-back. Early on, I learned it’s a good idea to take the parking brake off. You can reverse with the darned thing on, which leads to complacency. Too many times, I stalled out and stopped traffic on our semi-busy street only to have to slap my forehead and take the blasted parking brake off. It was a pedal on the floor, so not exactly in my line of sight. Great memories.” - Ann

I hate to admit it, but I have done that, too. Like, last week. - Shane

Have a fantastic Friday, and thanks for reading.

Wall Street Journal recently featured a happy story about Kura Sushi of Osaka, which is coming to the Jordan Creek area. That company raised their prices 3.3% in the last year yet sales were up 14%. The explanation was that they are still perceived as a value compared with other sushi joints. A two-piece serving of yellowtail still costs less than $4.

FILM REVIEW
‘Good Luck, Have Fun, Don’t Die’

By David Rowley

“Good Luck, Have Fun, Don’t Die”
R | 134 minutes
Director: Gore Verbinski
Writer: Matthew Robinson
Stars: Sam Rockwell, Juno Temple, Haley Lu Richardson

When was the last time a studio movie made you genuinely uncomfortable? Not in a jump-scare or gore-centric way, but in a “wait, did they just go there?” way that lingers in your brain for days? Gore Verbinski’s “Good Luck, Have Fun, Don’t Die” poses that question repeatedly, and the answers are not always comfortable. But they are, without exception, memorable.

The premise is classic high-concept pulp: a scruffy, unhinged man (Sam Rockwell) bursts into Norm’s, a late-night Los Angeles diner, claiming to be from the future. He needs to recruit patrons to help him stop a young boy from programming an AI that will eventually trigger the apocalypse. To ensure their cooperation, he has strapped a “reset bomb” to his chest. ...
