Good morning to you!

Welcome to an extra edition of the mailbag where you will find some of the comments, questions and ideas sent recently by readers of this newsletter or our publications. They are edited for space and clarity.

“I grew up in the 1950s and 1960s in a town that had many WWII veterans and a few WWI veterans (Obituaries are the best short stories, March 2, 2026). In those days, almost no one talked about their war record, not ever to most of their family. When we saw their obituaries with their war records and awards, many of us said, ‘So that is the reason he was that way’ as an excuse to explain a drinking problem or a withdrawal from social interaction. I can only guess how much love it took for some of those wives to help their husbands with ‘shell shock’ get through the nights and days.” - George

Great points that we civilians too often forget. - Shane

“Shane, dude! I'm going to just wing it here because you blew my mind with this bonified tubular subject (Slang, March 3, 2026). It was so cool. It was hot! What I'm trying to say is, it was sick. I think I need to go smoke a doobie, brother!” - James

Tubular? IDGI. - Shane

“ ‘Phantasm (1979).’ I watched in the dorm lounge with a couple of friends (Monster movie villains, March 4, 2026). One got so freaked out at a point late in the film that he jumped out of his chair and ran out of the room screaming. It's labeled a cult film now, but it was an independent film made by a young guy about one of his nightmares, and in the 1970s, it did $22 million at the box office.” - Brad

I guess I will be adding that one to my list of movies to watch. - Shane

“If you want to go waaay back, how about ‘Psycho’ or ‘The Birds,’ both Alfred Hitchcock classics (Monster movie villains, March 4, 2026). ‘Whatever Happened to Baby Jane’ really creeped me out, too. Perhaps I am dating myself?” - Kathy

I love the Hitchcock classics. I have never seen ‘Whatever Happened to Baby Jane,’ but I will be now. - Shane

“Shane, I loved your column on villains (Monster movie villains, March 4, 2026). Last Halloween, I was joking with friends that Reverend Kane would scare the crap out of Jason Voorhies and Michael Myers!” - Kevin

And me. - Shane

Have a thoughtful Thursday, and thanks for reading.

POLITICAL MERCURY
Jesse Jackson was a rural Iowan as much as any of us.

By Douglas Burns

Speaker of The House Mike Johnson is just wrong on his decision to deny a request from the family of the late civil rights leader and presidential candidate Jesse Jackson to lie in honor in the U.S. Capitol.

Historical precedents swing both ways on this. Dick Cheney and Charlie Kirk didn’t lie in honor. Billy Graham and Rosa Parks did. ...
