Good Monday Morning to You!

Well, another Father’s Day has come and gone. If you are a father, I hope you enjoyed it as much as I did. And if you have a father who is still alive, I hope you reached out and told him you love him.

My kids know that Father’s Day is more than one day to me. That’s why I call it Father’s Month. All 30 days of June dedicated to dads. Why not? I appreciate the humor in this idea. My kids? Not so much.

Regardless, we have five days left in Father’s Month, and I am still celebrating. Japanese exports grew by 2% during the COVID era, but their food exports grew by 13%. Gin and scallops led the way. Japanese distillers are making gin with new botanicals unique to Japan — like tea leaves and cherry blossoms — with none of the traditional botanicals of London gin. Interest is soaring in U.S. Roku is the most popular Japanese gin in Des Moines.

Scallops from Japan are selling well because the Japanese customize their markets. Huge scallops sell best in the U.S., where they were pioneered by Japanese Steakhouses like Ohana in West Des Moines. Europeans like smaller scallops.

In'tVeld's in Pella is now the only USDA meat processor in America that also runs a full bar. They are also making the best Canadian bacon I ever found, plus pecan rubbed bacon. This is new Pella. In WWII, Navy fliers stationed there for flight training could not drink at all, or even swim on Sundays.

On June 26, 1807, lightning hits a gunpowder factory in the small European country of Luxembourg, killing more than 300 people. Lightning kills approximately 73 people every year in the United States alone, but victims are almost always killed one at a time. The Luxembourg disaster may have been the most deadly lightning strike in history.

Head-turning wheels

My wife and I bought a brand new 1974 VW bug convertible in... 1974! We were not yet one year married. We still have the car. It’s a great car to pull out on a nice evening and go for ice cream. Several years ago we had Jerry Todden (Jerrys Bug Shop) go through it and repair all the rust many Iowa winters had eaten away on our bug. Jerry put a new floor pan in and went through everything that needed attention. Sadly, Jerry is long gone, and who knows where you can find a good VW Bug mechanic. While our Bug is not in showroom condition, it still runs good, and we keep it around because we love it. If it wasn’t a convertible, this might not be the same story. Anyway, it’s a great ice cream getter and turns a lot of heads as we drive down the road.
