Good morning to you!

Welcome to the Friday mailbag where you will find some of the comments, questions and ideas sent recently by readers of this newsletter or our publications. They are edited for space and clarity.

“While doing research for a book on Woodland Cemetery in Des Moines, I would find that too often a gravestone — or someone else's words — were one's final ‘obituary’ and all that can be found of a person's life (Obituaries are the best short stories, March 2, 2026). Try to leave a more important mark while you can. I am reminded of the last line of an obituary in The Des Moines Register several years ago: ‘He liked to vacuum.’ ” - Mike

You may have just suggested the next great Netflix series with people in the afterlife responding to their family members’ decisions on their obituaries or the words they put on their tombstones. - Shane

“I wrote my own obituary several years ago (Obituaries are the best short stories, March 2, 2026). I go back to it periodically to update things that have changed in my life, including my attitude about obituary content. Should it be funny, honest, critical or just plain boring? My thoughts on that change from year to year. I don’t want to burden my family with the task of writing it; they don’t know what I’m thinking most of the time. Give it a try, then you can edit your own content!” - Chuck

That’s a great suggestion for all of us. Well, most of us. OK, some of us. - Shane

“Too often in my newspaper career, I have read an obituary and wondered why in the world we didn't know about this person's life earlier so we could have shared their words about the experiences they had in a feature story and photos (Obituaries are the best short stories, March 2, 2026). Families ought to capture all they can in print, voice and video of their family members. They will be glad they did, and so will succeeding generations.” - Brad

I still have the audio message that my father recorded on the answering machine I bought him. Something as simple as that even has meaning years later, at least to me. - Shane

“Shane, I enjoyed your column on slang in the use of these words (Phrases we once considered cool, March 3, 2006). It was groovy in a far out kind of way.” - Kevin

Right on, man. - Shane

Have a fantastic Friday, and thanks for reading.

Some seafoods are at their best in winter when cold water encourages them to produce more fat. Uni, dungeness crab and sea scallops are three that do. Both Masao and Waterfront have featured their scallops connections recently.

WSJ recently published a story about Red Lobster's recovery from Chapter 11 bankruptcy. Thirty-six-year-old superstar CEO Damola Adamolekun overhauled Red Lobster’s menu, introduced a happy hour and freshened up the marketing. The nearly 60-year-old chain instituted a “red carpet hospitality” program. Hostesses are directed to acknowledge guests when they are 10 feet away and speak to them when they are within 4 feet. It's working for Adamolekun, who also turned around PF Chang's. Sales are up 14% in the last year.

FEATURE STORY
Water wars in the 21st century

By Jim Duncan

Water is the name humans give to the tasteless, odorless chemical bonding of two hydrogen molecules with one of oxygen — H2O. Don’t let its simplicity fool you. It is the molecule that made all life possible on Earth.

Comprising roughly 60% of the human body, water acts as the primary medium for metabolic reactions, transports nutrients and oxygen to cells, and regulates body temperature. It is the main component of blood and lymph, carrying oxygen and nutrients while removing metabolic waste. And, through sweat and respiration, it acts as a coolant to maintain a stable internal temperature.

The brain and heart are 73% water, and the lungs about 83%. The skin contains 64% water; muscles and kidneys 79%, and even our bones are 31% water. Each day, humans must consume a certain amount of water to survive. Of course, this varies, but an adult male needs about 3.2 quarts per day while an adult female needs about 2.3 quarts. ...
