Good morning to you!

Welcome to an extra edition of the mailbag where you will find some of the comments, questions and ideas sent recently by readers of this newsletter or our publications. They are edited for space and clarity.

“I suggest that you use the old hand sanitizer that you have on every surface you touch, except any food like apples that touch your hands (Hand sanitizer, Feb. 17, 2026). The other obvious item that you touch on a daily basis that you should not use a hand sanitizer on is your wife.” - George

As long as I keep the mask on, I should be fine. Maybe two masks. - Shane

“Good evening, Shane. Although it's not totally acceptable at our church, some say not acceptable at all, my wife and I have visited churches where bringing coffee into the sanctuary is even encouraged (Cupholders, Wednesday, Feb. 25, 2026). We are two of the few who bring coffee or water with us. I have been looking for ‘roadie holders,’ those plastic gizmos you hooked into the window slot to hold your beer back in our youth. I wonder if they could hold our coffee while hooked to the back of the pew in front of us?” - John

If you can’t find them locally, Amazon has you covered. A two-pack for $5.87. Just don’t take a turn too quickly. - Shane

“Hi, Shane, Reading your cup holder column brought back memories of hitting McDonald’s with my dad in the mid-1960s and flipping open the glove box so we had a place to park our Cokes (Cupholders, Wednesday, Feb. 25, 2026). Cars then were equipped with little molded indents inside the glovebox. The purpose was to hold your drinks. This worked just fine — as long as he didn’t put the car in gear. Solving the world’s problems over fries was one thing; navigating a corner with an open glove box was quite another.” - Lee

Fries solve the world’s problems? This I have to try. - Shane

“Shane, please resume posting the pictures of commercial properties sold in the Des Moines area. I moved away from Des Moines area about a year ago, and I faithfully read your news every day and it keeps me connected to the city I was born in. I always enjoyed seeing the buildings that have been sold — and being able to visually identify the buildings. Thanks for your consideration.” - Marilyn

In the words of Carol Anne from “Poltergeist II,” “they’re back!”- Shane

Have a thoughtful Thursday, and thanks for reading.

FROM WOI: Iowa's measles vaccination rate remains low, spring break travel poses risk. As Iowa moves out of the typical cold and flu season, local health officials want Iowans to remember measles doesn’t follow the same seasonal patterns. And, since vaccination rates remain below recommended levels, the virus could pose a risk. Iowa’s measles, mumps and rubella vaccination rate sat at 86.5% as of 2025, recently released state data shows. Polk County’s rate is slightly higher, but health experts say both fall about 8 to 10 percentage points short of what’s needed to prevent measles from spreading if someone brings it into the community. ... Clear Mortgage meteorology

A warmer day today. Not much of a rain chance until early Friday morning. Storms move in early... a little hail is possible. It appears there will be a second round in the evening, with which there is also a severe chance... wind and hail. Nice weather Sunday through at least part of Tuesday, when severe weather could be possible again. Then some cold returns. And maybe light snow chances.

26 years in Urbandale
Saliers says there is lots to love about the community.

By Lindsey Giardino

For Charlotte Saliers and her husband, Ted, the best part of living in Urbandale is the strong sense of community they feel. The couple has lived in town for 26 years, which certainly contributes to that feeling.

They initially chose Urbandale because of the neighborhood where they found their home.

“We enjoy our neighborhood because we like our neighbors, and it is in a good location,” Charlotte Saliers says. “We are close to shopping and restaurants and, with our proximity to the Interstate, it is pretty easy for us to get to other parts of town.” ...
