Good morning to you!

Slang. Most all of us have used it. And, we think we know what it is. But, despite its origins in the 18th century, slang has multiple meanings today.

For many of us, slang is defined as words, phrases and linguistic usages that are common in everyday conversation but are avoided in formal writing and speech — except in this column, where I attempt to toss some slang in from time to time. Word.

But, for others of us, slang refers to a language exclusively used by the members of a particular “in-group” to establish group identity, exclude outsiders, or both. Kids with rizz.

A reader recently shared an article with me from MediaFeed by Alina A. Wang entitled “10 slang words that used to be cool but aren’t anymore.” Yes, it may be time to pump the brakes.

Wang says the phrases we once considered cool and commonly used in conversations might now be considered outdated or even cringeworthy. That’s right. No dice.

Clearly, the writer is of a younger generation, as most of her examples only date back to the late 1980s. It is half-baked, you might say. Even so, here are a few of hers I once used that may get you cheesin’:

1. “Groovy,” used to describe something that was cool or awesome, originated in the jazz culture of the 1920s but found its peak in the 1970s with the hippies. The word is now only used in a nostalgic or humorous context. Phil Collins tried to bring it back in 1988 with “A Groovy Kind of Love.” It wasn’t groovy.

2. “Radical.” Those of you who grew up in the 1980s likely tried to shorten the word “radical” to “rad” in an effort to be like the skaters and surfers of California — or those playing hacky sack in Iowa. It was used to describe something impressive or extreme, but in a positive way. It’s not rad anymore.

3. “Bogus.” If you didn’t like something, you called it bogus, at least in the 1990s, thanks to movies like “Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure,” where it was used to dismiss something as lame. Guess what? Bogus is now bogus.

How about you? What slang from your generation is no longer cool? Send me a note to let me know, and I will share in the mailbag. And, in the meantime, keep on truckin’!

Have a terrific Tuesday, and thank you for reading.

Finding purpose in the classroom
Third grade is right where Sheldahl wants to be.

By Lindsey Giardino

Molly Sheldahl, a third-grade teacher at Central Elementary, went back to school to become a teacher after her daughter, Marley, was born.

“It was something I always thought I wanted to do, but it wasn’t until 2008 that I got serious about making it happen,” she shares. “What really inspired me to pursue teaching is the belief that all students deserve a quality education, and it felt like the time to start pursuing my dream.”

Sheldahl graduated from Iowa State University in 2014 with a bachelor's degree and from Morningside College in 2019 with her master’s degree. ...
