Good morning to you!

You have clearly bought things from other people. And, you have likely sold things to others, too. So, what makes a great salesperson? The answers to that question vary more than you may think. The person doing the selling often has a different perspective on it than the person being sold to. And, in fairness, each industry — and, as a result, each salesperson — is different. Meanwhile, there are some similar qualities that great salespeople seemingly share, regardless of what they are selling.

I spent much of my career selling. I still do. It is an essential part of running any business. You can create the best products or offer the best services in the world, but if you don’t have customers buying them, you won’t be in business for long.

Although my wife manages the advertising sales side of our business today, I have interviewed and hired hundreds of salespeople through the years. And, I have found that the best salespeople do seem to share similar qualities.

The Brooks Group is a North Carolina company that provides sales training and development programs. They effectively summed up 10 qualities that make for a great salesperson, and I share a few of their points below. See if you agree and check out their full list here.

Charisma. Great salesperson charm potential customers and compel them to believe in what they are selling. I agree. Who wants to buy from a boring salesperson?

Persistence. Not every potential customer is going to say yes, but great salespeople don’t let that stop them from trying over and over with new ideas, new angles, new approaches.

Listening. Great salespeople know how to listen to their potential customers. Then, they follow up with creative solutions that meet those needs.

Problem-solving. Great salespeople know how to take their customers’ problems and find solutions that meet their needs while also meeting the needs of their employer.

Confidence. Great salespeople sincerely believe in their products or services and go out and sell them in honest and professional ways while also being team players inside their company.

These, of course, are just a few of the traits of great salespeople. Which ones are not listed above that you think are important? Send me a note and let me know.

Have a terrific Tuesday, and thank you for reading.

Beaty finds restoration projects rewarding
Uses his work skills for projects he enjoys

By Rachel Harrington

Mike Beaty enjoys working with his hands. He did automotive and aftermarket automotive work during his 20s and 30s. Later, he worked on electrical automation, such as control panels for robotics.

“In my teens, 20s and 30s, I learned out of necessity,” Beaty says. “If something broke, I had to figure out how to fix it. I learned from others, picking their minds.”

Between the jobs he has held and what he has learned from observation and asking questions, Beaty says he has developed a well-rounded skill set.  ...
