Good morning to you!

Sore throat. Runny nose. Congestion. Sneezing. Coughing. Sound familiar?

I have had these symptoms — off and on — for the majority of this winter season. I feel quite good right now, but I have struggled to fully kick this cold, and I am not alone. Many of you have been fighting this, too. One day, you feel horrible. A few days later, you feel like you are on the mend. Then it starts all over again. And again. And again. But why?

The common cold affects millions of people each year, but most cases resolve on their own within a week or two. Why can’t I be so lucky? I have been to the doctor. I have taken the medications. And, I still have this darn cold.

According to MedShun.com, the following three factors can increase the risk of a cold relapse: a weakened immune system, exposure to new viral strains and certain lifestyle factors.

The site says, when our immune system is compromised, it becomes less effective at fighting off infections, making it more likely for the cold virus to resurface. Stress, lack of sleep, poor nutrition and certain medical conditions are all factors. So, I need to maintain a healthier lifestyle, get more rest, eat a balanced diet and manage my stress. Got it.

New viral strains are another factor that contribute to a relapse of the common cold. The site says the common cold is caused by different strains of the rhinovirus, and there are more than 200 of them. Our immune systems apparently develop immunity against a specific strain we are infected with. But, when we come into contact with a different strain, our immune system may not recognize it, and we can become infected again. Ugh. In other words, avoid sick people. I will do my best.

Certain lifestyle factors also increase the risk of a relapse of the common cold. Smoking and exposure to environmental toxins and pollutants weaken the immune system and increase the likelihood of a relapse. I don’t smoke anything, and I will try to avoid toxins and pollutants. Check.

I wash my hands frequently. I get plenty of rest. I stay hydrated. I eat fruits, vegetables and whole grains. I manage my stress. Regular exercise? Well, I could stand to sweat more, and maybe that’s the answer for me. It certainly couldn’t hurt.

How about you? Any tips for avoiding a cold relapse? Send them my way, and I will gladly share them in an upcoming mailbag.

Have a magnificent Monday, and thanks for reading.

Kellie and Stephen Muldrow’s proposal story comes straight out of a book. Kellie, an Indianola native, and Stephen, from Houston, Texas, met in 2011 at a small Bible college in Indiana. Over the next five years, they got to know each other among common friends. Near the end of the spring semester in 2016, they began a dating relationship.

“We were in our mid-20s by that time, and we knew what we wanted, so our relationship moved pretty quickly after that,” Kellie shares. ...
