Good morning to you!

Welcome to the Friday mailbag where you will find some of the comments, questions and ideas sent recently by readers of this newsletter or our publications. They are edited for space and clarity.

“The day my grandson met Dixie, she didn’t bark, wag or leap into his arms as dogs do in movies (A boy and his dog, Feb. 5, 2026). She just sat there — one floppy ear up, one down — watching him like she was trying to decide if he was worth trusting. He knelt down. Didn’t rush her. Didn’t talk loudly. He just held out his hand like he had all the time in the world. That was it. Dixie stood up, walked over, and pressed her head into his chest as she’d finally found where she belonged. From that day on, they were a matched set. Dixie followed him everywhere. She learned his routines, his moods, and exactly when he needed a nudge or a nap buddy. People said he rescued Dixie, but anyone watching them together could see the truth: they saved each other. Dixie found a home, and my grandson found a best friend who listened without interrupting and loved without conditions. And, every night, when Dixie curled up beside his bed, one floppy ear still standing guard, it was clear — this rescue story had a very happy ending.” - John

Stories like this explain exactly why every child should have a dog. Thank you for sharing it, John. - Shane

“Ha! Smart aleck (Mailbag, Friday, Feb. 6, 2026)! Now spit out your gum and stick it behind the ‘at.’ ” - Margaret

I am a bit surprised to see this comment from someone as erudite as you, Margaret. Keep smiling! - Shane

“This morning, while shopping at a big box store, I came across a plastic combination back scratcher and shoe horn for those who have trouble bending over, like me prior to hip replacement. On returning home and reading your column, you discuss back scratching (You scratch my back, Feb. 9, 2026). Earlier in the snooping, I found a device we've probably all seen advertised to inflate tires, balls, kiddy pools, and everything that needs inflation except your ego. It's based on the frame of a rechargeable screwdriver and drill with a detachable battery and sells for about $80. I contemplated buying one, but my Dutch wife's influence on me recalled how many times I've needed one. Since the answer was zero, I finished my snooping and left without the air pump.” - John

But, did you ask your Dutch wife if you could buy the back scratcher? - Shane

“Hi Shane, Thanks for this (Food Dude, Feb. 12, 2026). ‘Bet you didn't know.’ Next year's Super Bowl will be played on Valentine's Day. This is a first and makes us wonder how two of the most overpromoted events in American culture can co-exist.’ Talk about a ratings event. Perfect opportunity for a singer to perform and then marry a football player. Unless the Vikings are in the game. I likely won’t watch.” - Steve

Have a fantastic Friday, and thanks for reading.

Bet you didn't know
Glyphosate is so creepy that Casey DeSantis, first lady of Florida and head of that state’s MAHA movement, announced recently that tests have discovered glyphosate in children’s breakfast cereals. The chemical poison is for killing stuff, mainly weeds, not for human consumption.

Iowa legislators are working on the “Iowa Junk Fee Prevention Act” (HF2047). It would require upfront, all-in price disclosure for lodging platforms, ticketing services and food delivery apps, prohibiting mandatory fees from being added late in the transaction process. While aimed primarily at third-party platforms, the bill could affect how hospitality businesses are represented online. The Iowa Restaurant and Hospitality Association is closely reviewing the proposal to "ensure transparency requirements don’t unintentionally penalize restaurants or hotels that already provide clear pricing."

Pursuing art with purpose
Sperry embraces color in her paintings.

By Rachel Harrington

For Lucinda Sperry, art has been both a calling and a compass. What began as an early fascination with design techniques during her time at Iowa Lakes Community College evolved into a lifelong journey of creativity, color and rediscovery.

“When I first started learning design, everything was still being done by hand,” she recalls. “By the time I transferred to Grand View University, the industry had shifted — suddenly everything was digital.”

After college, she honed her skills working at The Altoona Herald-Mitchellville Index and Business Publications Corporation, gaining real-world experience in design and production. Only then did she take the leap into entrepreneurship and launch her own graphic design agency — Designgoddess.com. But life had other plans. ...
