Good morning to you!

Old man strength. It is a phrase many of you are familiar with. It refers to a surprising physical strength some older men maintain or develop, something said to be due to years of experience and/or muscle memory. Some say this strength is attributed to consistent physical activity and training, which help counteract age-related muscle loss.

Old man strength is most noticeable in the hand power of older men. The clasp. The grip. The clutch. Whatever you want to call it, it’s there. And, it starts with a simple handshake.

My wrestling teammates and I would talk about old man strength in college when we would compete at open tournaments, sometimes against “old men” in their 30s. They had strength that was difficult to describe, but it was there. Fortunately, it was offset by some of them not being in the greatest shape. Some.

But is this old man strength for real?

Josh Bryant says yes. He would know. He is a strength trainer for Olympia bodybuilders, world-renowned strength athletes and traditional athletes like D1 football players and professional baseball players.

He says, “Old man strength isn’t a myth — it’s a war chest of iron years, a refusal to break, and a body rewired to dominate.”

My dad wasn’t a physical specimen by any means. He was lean and trim, but he wasn’t a mass of muscle. Even so, he had the old man strength, too, as he spent most of his life doing manual labor of some sort. He liked to mess with me on this, though.

Quite often, around the dinner table, Dad would pass me a jar of pickles after making an attempt to twist off the lid. He would say, “Shaner, can you open this for me?” And, I would grip that pickle jar with all my might — and it would twist off with ease, as he already had it loosened up. “Wow, you are strong,” he would say, holding back a smile.

He did this to me hundreds of times, and I fell for it the first 90 or so. After I finally caught on, he would pull this prank on my friends who would join us for meals. They would all get a good laugh. Many years later, when Dad was in his final years, I turned the tables and passed him the loosened-up pickle jar and asked him if he could open it for me. And, he fell for it. At least I think so. Either way, we both smiled. Hopefully, you are right now, too.

Have a terrific Tuesday, and thank you for reading.

"Gung hei fat choy" and "laissez les bons temps rouler"
The first days of the Lunar New Year fortnight and Mardi Gras are both today. Both are all-in, blow out celebrations in which food plays the leading role. Both are serious about good luck, sharing and celebrating like this could be the last day of your life.

The LNY fortnight is the busiest period of the year for worldwide travel, by far. It is a time to visit family or just to take off. This year is a horse year, signaling wild abandon following an introspective year of the snake. It's also a fire year meaning it will be more intense than usual.

Whole foods are important, to consume and as gifts. C Fresh Market has stocked up on tangerines with stems and leaves intact, whole fish and sticky rice with bean paste wrapped in banana leaves.

Mardi Gras is the last day before Ash Wednesday and Lent. For Ash Wednesday Week, Waterfront is running specials on Icelandic cod, haddock and Arctic char.

Haynes is rooted in Winterset
Appreciates community’s many assets

By Lindsey Giardino

For more than a decade, Josh Haynes has called Winterset home.

He moved to town 12 years ago for a variety of reasons — from family history and school quality to cost of living and safety. Over time, those initial reasons have only been reinforced as he’s become more rooted in the community.
The property he currently owns reflects two long-held priorities: living in the country with some land, while still being close to town.

Haynes is in the process of building a home, so while there isn’t much of a “home” there just yet, he’s excited about the size of the lot and the future memories that will be made on it, especially because the neighborhood feels quiet and friendly. ...
