Good morning to you!

Dubbing. It was a pastime that my teenage friends and I took part in for many hours. One of us would fork out eight bucks for a cassette tape of our favorite music, and we would then make copies of that tape for the others. More often, though, we would select specific songs and make our own “mix tapes.”

We didn’t sell the tapes. We only made them for personal use — and for our friends’ personal uses. So, was this dubbing process legal? Probably not, but that didn’t stop the stereo equipment manufacturers from producing dual cassette dubbing decks by the boatload. They even made boom boxes with dual cassette players.

My dual cassette deck was of the Pioneer brand, matching my receiver and equalizer stereo components. It had Dolby B and Dolby C noise reduction to cut down the dreaded tape hiss. I know you are impressed.

I made hundreds of copies of cassette tapes with that tape deck. Unless the process really was illegal. Then, I simply watched my friend Ian do it.

Believe it or not, this dubbing process was a step up from the days of pointing a microphone from my General Electric tape recorder to one of my brother’s stereo speakers to record Casey Kasem as he played “American Top 40.”

The music listening process wasn’t as seamless as it is today. There wasn’t an Alexa that would find and play the song of your choice in seconds. You found the tape. You inserted the tape. You used fast forward or rewind to find the song you wanted. And, you hoped the tape wouldn’t crinkle inside the player. If it did, of course, you knew how to use a pencil to rewind it back into the reels. Forever garbled, yes, but it worked.

Like me, some of you may have accidentally recorded over one or more of your mix tapes. That’s when we learned how to break the tabs in the upper corners to prevent this from happening again.

Memorex. TDK. Maxell. Those were brands most any teenage boy in the 1980s knew. And, we all seemed to have our preference, much like Pepsi vs. Coke or Nike vs. Adidas or Ford vs. Chevy.

I had that Pioneer dual cassette deck for years, but it finally wore out. One of the decks was dragging, and I eventually sold all the components at a garage sale. Oddly, though, even though I no longer have a cassette player of any sort, I do still have boxes of old cassettes, including some of those wonderful mix tapes. And, I keep some pencils on hand, too, just in case.

Shortly after their move, St. John taught talented and gifted classes at Madrid High School part time. After a year, she grew tired of the commute and was ready to return to the classroom teaching English full time — and what better place to do that than in her new hometown?

“It's been a wonderful way to connect to the community, and I love our WHS staff,” she says. ...
