Good morning to you!

Welcome to an extra edition of the mailbag where you will find some of the comments, questions and ideas sent recently by readers of this newsletter or our publications. They are edited for space and clarity.

“I suddenly realized that I was born in the last century (Back in the day, Jan. 22, 2026). What a shock. I also realized that I have lived in five different quarter-centuries. My new continuity (age) is 4 3/4 (3/4 of a century plus 4 years).” - John

John, you are requiring me to get out a calculator. - Shane

“Do you wonder what soldiers did when they didn't have Kleenex back in the Napoleon days (The hanky, Feb. 3, 2026)? I first learned about this in college. Cuff buttons were part of the solution. Their purpose was to enforce decorum by preventing troops from soiling expensive uniforms by wiping their noses, tears or wounds on the sleeves. The presence of the buttons made this practice annoying, discouraging the habit and ensuring the troops remained presentable. Leaders like Napoleon and Frederick II of Prussia mandated them to stop troops from soiling uniforms by wiping on the sleeve.” - Margaret

Napoleon apparently thought having bodily fluids run down his soldiers’ faces was better than on their sleeves. Interesting. - Shane

“Sometimes your writings are like a sermon (A boy and his dog, Feb. 5, 2026). Today’s hit home perfectly. Thank you for that!” - Jimmy

And, you don’t even have to put anything in the collection plate! How about that? - Shane

“Hi, Shane. I loved the story about Tinker (A boy and his dog, Feb. 5, 2026). I got my grandfather's dog when he passed in 1952 — a border collie named Lassie. I have a picture of her in my office 74 years later. Thanks.” - Roger

How could someone not love a dog named Lassie? June Lockhart would be smiling. And Timmy, too. Thanks for sharing that, Roger. - Shane

Have a thoughtful Thursday, and thanks for reading.

Anheuser Busch won the Super Bowl commercial war this year with a story of a Clydesdale growing up with a bald eagle to Lynyrd Skynyrd's "Free Bird." Car ads, which accounted for 40% of Super Bowl ads as recently as 2019, were down to three - GM, Toyota and Volkswagen. EVs were not represented this year. A 30-second black and white ad with Mike Tyson supporting a "real foods" diet won praise as ads for snacks and candy were almost non-existent.

Bet you didn't know
Next year's Super Bowl will be played on Valentine's Day. This is a first and makes us wonder how two of the most overpromoted events in American culture can co-exist.

Meet Chris Danner
Made impact as student and now makes impact as an educator

By Lindsey Giardino

Chris Danner’s career path took shape while he was a college student at Fort Hays State University in Hays, Kansas, where he attended on a basketball scholarship. He was originally enrolled in accounting and communications before shifting his focus to education.

“The only reason for the change is because I was going into my senior year and was looking for something else that I was close to completing, since I was no longer interested in the previous two degrees,” Danner explains. “Elementary ed was the closest. On a last-minute whim, I joined the education department and completed the degree.” ...
