Good morning to you!

Tucked away in my desk drawer at work is a note from my daughter Samantha that she penned in elementary school. At the top of the letter, she wrote: “3 Things I Like About My Dad.”

Now, what dad wouldn’t read that? And, what dad wouldn’t keep it? The note is nearly two decades old, and I continue to read it whenever I need a pick-me-up.

No. 2 on the list she wrote was: “His World's Best Hot Chocolate. She is right. It’s not a special recipe. It’s quite simple, actually, and it is quite accessible. Don't tell Samantha, but I got it from the back of a Hershey’s Cocoa Powder can.

As a child, the only hot chocolate I knew was the pre-mixed stuff that I spooned out of a can and stirred in hot water. It was good, but it didn’t put my parents on any “best” list.

Years later, I saw the recipe on the back of a Hershey’s Cocoa Powder can and decided to give it a try. Here’s the magic:

Mix 1/2 cup of sugar, 1/4 cup of Hershey's Cocoa Powder and a pinch of salt in a saucepan. Stir in 1/3 cup of hot water, bring to a boil while stirring, then add 4 cups of milk and heat until hot, finishing with 3/4 teaspoon of vanilla extract.

Mmmm. Mmmm. Winter never tasted so good. The problem, of course, is how this relates to the “too much of one thing is bad” adage I attempt to live by. The calories alone are concerning, but I learned the hard way that cocoa can be a contributor to kidney stones. It took me a few years to figure it out, but the correlation seems to hold true, at least for me.

Cocoa is apparently high in oxalates, which research says can contribute to the formation of kidney stones, especially in individuals like me who are prone to them. As such, it is advisable for those at risk to limit their intake of cocoa products. Trust the science.

I have had kidney stone problems every winter for several years. I knocked off the hot cocoa, and I have had many fewer episodes. Coincidence? Maybe. But, those of us who suffer through kidney stones will avoid (or cut back on) most anything to avoid getting them again.

Even the world’s best hot chocolate. Cheers!

Have a wonderful Wednesday, and thanks for reading.

Woebegone Wednesday

While deep cleaning the Greenwood Lounge, workers discovered an 8-foot-tall window above a false ceiling in the ladies' bathroom. It will be restored along with a new tall ceiling. New owner Connor Delaney says he thought it would take a week to clean up the place but now expects a grand reopening the first week of March. "It should be the first Thursday." It's only right that it reopens on a night when Rudy plays there. "Rudy" is Iowa Blues Hall of Famer Scott Eggleston of the Soul Searchers. He began the Greenwood tradition of top musicians playing the dive bar for tips.

George Formaro has been closing KFMG's  Kitchen Insider radio show each Saturday morning with his take on Jimmy Durante’s legendary close. We found out what “And good night to you Captain Trang, wherever you are” is all about. “Captain Trang” is Des Moines restaurateur Trang Pham, owner of Egg Roll Ladies in the Equitable Building. She is currently deployed with her Iowa Army National Guard troops to the Middle East. Kitchen Insider became particularly concerned about her after the Army refused to release the names of the three members of the Iowa guard who were shot, but not killed, in the Dec. 13 attack that left two of its members dead.

Martins choose remodel over move
Neighborhood sways couple to stay put.

By Lindsey Giardino

In May 2010, Julie and Greg Martin found the perfect home for their needs, complete with a primary bedroom on the main level and a private backyard, both high on their wish list.
More than 15 years later, they decided it was time to make some major updates.

“We initially thought about moving to get the open, larger kitchen we desired,” Martin shares. “We looked but couldn't find anything we liked that also had a private backyard and smaller neighborhood. Our neighbors are special. We decided we didn't want to leave them or the setting, so we decided to look into remodeling.” ...
