Good morning to you!

“We gotta get excited!”

Those were the words of a 74-year-old man who jumped up on a desk as part of an effort to get his salespeople pumped up about the latest promotion his business was having.

The man was Charles Gabus, and the business was Charles Gabus Ford. It was 1992, and I was a young advertising account executive for The Des Moines Register. Mr. Gabus asked me to attend his sales meeting so I could get a feel for what he was trying to accomplish. His message was clear — “If you want to succeed, you better be passionate about what you are doing.” And, he expected me to be passionate, too.

I thought of Mr. Gabus the other day when I read the following words from actor Willem Dafoe: “The worst thing is to get involved with people who aren’t passionate about what they’re doing.”

How true is that? But, can everyone have the same passion that Charles Gabus had? And what would the world be like if we all did?

The truth is, we also need some folks who simply complete their tasks. They are the plodders, people who move slowly but with steady persistence. They are often characterized by their determination and faithfulness in completing tasks over time. They may not achieve quick results, but they are known for their resilience and commitment. Those are certainly good qualities.

Meanwhile, for plodders to succeed, someone needs to set the course and steer the ship. My friend Lisa Miller understands this. Lisa is the owner of a group of newspapers in the northwest part of Iowa and the adjoining states. I got to know her years ago through our involvement in a trade association we both still belong to. When the time came for Lisa to lead one of our annual conferences in 2022, she showed her passion. She decided to jazz up the members in the audience in the first morning session by bringing in the Iowa State pep band. They had us on our feet and cheering. The attendees in the conference room next to us had to wonder what in the world was going on. Yes, we were excited, and that effort set the tone for the entire conference. Lisa continues those passionate efforts in so many things she does.

Charles Gabus died in 2008 at 90 years old. I don't think Lisa Miller ever met him, but she would have liked him — and vice versa. The enthusiasm. The passion. The excitement. As Mr. Gabus once told me, “It’s what makes us get out of bed every morning.”

Have a terrific Tuesday, and thank you for reading.

Tuesday Touts

Chicago Speakeasy makes prime rib every day. They make hot beef sandwiches once a week. That is how they can make gravy for the hot beef sandwiches from pan drippings. And how they recycle yesterday's prime rib into a sandwich. Our most recent experience with this sandwich last week has convinced us it belongs at the top of the list of metro Des Moines' hot beef sandwiches this winter, alongside Noah's and Crouse Cafe.
