Good morning to you!

Welcome to the Friday mailbag where you will find some of the comments, questions and ideas sent recently by readers of this newsletter or our publications. They are edited for space and clarity.

“Hey, Shane, just thought I'd throw these out there (Back in the day, Jan. 22, 2026). 1.Words weren't bleeped on TV. 2. Athletes didn't point to the sky after a good play. 3. A car could be worked on without computer knowledge. 4. You didn't have a phone ‘plan.’ 5. Only sailors had tattoos... and nobody had anything pierced.” – James

I forgot about the naughty words being dubbed over on TV, never bleeped. Funny. – Shane

“A few things popped in my mind when I read what you wrote about winter driving prep (Driving in snow, Jan. 26, 2026). Leaving home without child care items is very inconvenient for you and the children as LEOs don't carry diapers, wipes or formula. Stores that offer delivery are not coming out to the interstate between Kellogg and Newton westbound to bring you supplies when you're stuck in traffic there. That fellow who has thrown modesty to the wind to relieve himself is as pleased about his situation as you are witnessing it. Avert your eyes. No one is going to bring a port a potty. Carrying a spare key in a pocket or on a chain around your neck makes getting back in your inadvertently locked car easier. I speak from experience. And, for gosh sakes, don't embark on a trip without means to provide for unexpected needs. Lastly, believe me when I tell you the officers, medics, firefighters, DOT personnel and especially the tow truck drivers are not enjoying nature's splendor and are working as fast as safety will allow them to get ‘Billy Big Rig’ out of your way.” - John

I appreciate the planners like you, John. - Shane

“Given the big event this month, Mike Rowley's hilarious response to you today gave me a picture of what the Old Man Olympics might look like (Mailbag, Thursday, Jan. 29, 2026). His event: Putting on pants while standing — sweats division, jeans division, dress division. Speed is a component, but judges would evaluate competitors based on continuity of balance, number of hops to avoid falling down and general style. Add that to these, and you have a pentathlon: the ‘What was that guy's name’ competition, the ‘Where did I leave my keys’ competition, the ‘What did my wife tell me she wanted for Christmas’ competition, and the ‘Where did I park my car’ division.” - Brad

You may have just scripted the newest reality TV show. - Shane

“Let me act as your teacher. I just started reading the Jan. 29 issue of your morning Umbrella, and now I finally get the chance to call out someone for doing what has been really bugging me for years (Mailbag, Jan. 29, 2026). In your last sentence of the response to John — get rid of the ‘at.’ Or if you want, put the AT in front of WHERE. But don't end it in AT. Often when someone says something like ‘I don't know where it's at,’ I want to tell them to look behind the at. I am a bit surprised to see this mistake from someone as erudite as you. No worry. I'll keep reading. - Margaret

Margaret, what are you getting at? - Shane

Have a fantastic Friday, and thanks for reading.

Autopsy of a golden age
The Pappajohn Sculpture Park district was, not too long ago, the best restaurant district in Iowa. It attracted Marc Narvailles, David Baruthio, Scott Carlson, George Formaro, Derek Eidson, Sean Wilson, Carly Groben, Diego Rodriguez and Tony Lemmo, among other restaurateurs. That's a virtual Who's Who of great Iowa chefs and restaurateurs. Every good restaurant west of 10th downtown on Locust is now gone — Nomad, Americana, Proof, Proof 2, Host, Hot Shots, Ritual Cafe, Django, Rinehardt Room, etc. COVID and the work-from-home ethos that followed is usually deemed the reason. The workforce in the PSP area has been drastically reduced.

We think, and we are not alone, that the street festivals and food trucks that took over the PSP weekend after weekend spring/summer/fall each year also helped to kill the district for restaurants. They obliterated parking and undercut the restaurants' prices — drastically and unfairly. When a restaurant's regular customers can't get to you without a hassle on Friday and Saturday, they find somewhere else to go. It's no coincidence that Tenth Street is doing just fine, while everything west of there is dead. Tenth is never closed off for festivals. Rents in the PSG area are super high. Lunch died first. Weekend business is the “make or break” point in the notoriously low margin restaurant business.

Django's Paul Rottenberg told us last fall that the closing of Americana was a death knell for the district. This was not a surprise. But it left downtown Des Moines diners looking for somewhere to get their fix of duck frites, Italian caviar, filet à Rossini, coq au vin, and Rossini burgers.

‘Medieval Magic’ sabbatical. Good night, Captain Trang.

By CITYVIEW staff

Each February, we review the sabbaticals (or, as stated by the Iowa Board of Regents, “professional development assignments”) granted to the professors at the state’s three public universities: Iowa State University, the University of Iowa, and the University of Northern Iowa. For us common folk, a sabbatical may be used to take time off of work for a lengthy vacation. For these professors, the PDAs are used to do research, develop curricula, write books and create art. And other things. ...
