Good morning to you!

A co-worker let me know that her family dog passed away. She was understandably sad. I was sad, too. Pets become part of our families. Those who didn’t grow up with a family dog don’t understand the connection, and that’s understandable, as well. Unfortunately, they missed out.

As a father of three kids, we had our share of dogs around the house. We adopted four of them through the years, all as adult dogs or “short-term commitments,” as my wife called them. Her statement was true, and maybe that made it easier to say goodbye to them in their final days. I said easier, not easy.

As difficult as having a family pet die is for adults, I am convinced that it is even more difficult for children who didn’t know a life without their canine companion.

My childhood dog was a Boston terrier. She was overweight, her colors were mismarked, and she had a cancer growth on her face the size of a large marble. But, this 7-year-old kid thought she was prettier than any princess.

The dog’s name was Tinker, a named my mother coined after the dog before it that chewed on my brother’s Tinker Toys, the popular wooden construction set for kids. Mom had the dog trained quite well. When outside, it didn’t leave our yard, except to do its business in the neighbor’s yard. And, when inside, it didn't leave the kitchen. The exception, mom told me, was when I was a baby and it would sneak out at night and cuddle alongside me in my baby bassinet.

Yes, Tinker and I had a connection, not unlike most boys and their dogs. Admittedly, I wasn’t always the nicest to her. I would dress her up in my too-little T-shirts, spray her with the garden hose on full blast and use her as a giant horse for my Johnny West, Six Million Dollar Man and Evel Knievel action figures. (They weren’t dolls, dammit.) Despite Mom telling me to knock it off, I also encouraged her to run alongside my Big Wheel tricycle and bite at the plastic wheels.

Tinker died when I was 8 years old. I still recall Mom yelling to Dad that Tinker wasn’t breathing. Dad jumped out of the shower and stood in the kitchen in a bath towel, holding the dog in one arm and open-handing it with the other to try to revive it. Mom told me to go outside, and I did. Dad got dressed and left in his car with Tinker wrapped up in her blanket. I am not sure what happened from that point, other than my brother Steve later that night showing me Tinker’s burial spot in the back yard, right next to a wooden utility pole that became a tombstone of sorts.

I miss all the dogs I have had, but Tinker entered this world before me, and up until my 8th birthday, I didn’t know a world without her. Thinking of her still makes me smile. And, like every boy and his dog, it should.

Have a thoughtful Thursday, and thanks for reading.

Fat phobia fallback. Robert Kennedy’s health movement has touted beef tallow, made from the melted-down fatty tissue of cattle carcasses, as a seed-oil alternative. Tallow's backers cite health concerns linked to seed oils, including inflammation. But the American Heart Association still endorses seed oils. Steak & Shake led the way here switching to tallow-cooked french fries.

Dairy is hot again. Demand for yogurt, cottage cheese and butter is helping fuel the growth. Full-fat products in particular are selling and are backed by the new dietary guidelines. U.S. sales of whole milk rose 5% by volume in the 52 weeks ended Dec. 13, according to the market-research firm NIQ. That compares with a 1% decline for all cow’s milk over the same period.

How many hot sauces is too many? Frank’s Red Hot has four new sauces out in time for Super Bowl parties: Garlic Parmesan Wing Sauce & Dip; Spicy Maple Wing Sauce & Dip, with aged cayenne peppers, molasses and maple syrup; Pineapple Hawaiian Wing Sauce & Dip, with pineapple juice, cayenne peppers and soy sauce; and Ghost Pepper Ranch Sauce, in squeeze bottles.
