Good morning to you!

The best. Those two words have a lot of meaning. You read about them each day in the Daily Umbrella, as we feature what CITYVIEW readers deem as the best people, places and events in the Des Moines metro area. And, we celebrated the best of 2026 last night at the Val Air Ballroom at our CITYVIEW Best Of Des Moines event, an amazing gathering of nearly 1,100 attendees — our largest to date.

This marked our 18th year for the Best of Des Moines event and at least 29 years for our readers’ poll. This year’s poll consisted of 268 questions that provided voters with the opportunity to fill in the blanks. A total of 12,048 votes were cast this year.

In the early years of the poll, it was revolutionary. Nowhere near as many votes were cast then as today, but it was entertaining and represented what was hot in Des Moines at the time, just as it does now. Readers then were required to fill out a hand-written ballot and mail it in. We continued that process for a while, but as the digital age came upon us, readers wanted to be able to vote online. And vote they did. The number of people voting today is more than 10x what it was in the beginning, and we thank you for being so passionate about the people, places and events of Des Moines and central Iowa.

Being recognized as the Best of Des Moines is such a prestigious honor that some folks go to great lengths to win. Many do so in creative ways by encouraging their customers or members to vote for them. Some offer incentives for them to do so. That’s smart.

Others are not so honorable. They attempt to vote multiple times by clearing their cookies on their computers and voting again and again. Others are now attempting to use AI to beat the system. We catch them through our own use of technology now, including AI, and we throw those votes out, exactly as we stated we would do on our rules page. Those who attempt to cheat waste a great deal of time and, in many cases, money to win. That’s not smart.

There have always been, and always will be, cheaters in this world including right here in Des Moines. Years ago, people would fill out the printed ballot and then make dozens of photo copies, sending them all in the same envelope to us, despite the rules clearly stating one vote per reader. Amazing. And today, some try to bend the rules in a digital way to do the same. It doesn’t work.

What does work is being a great person, being involved in a great organization or running a great business — and that is what the winners in this year’s readers’ poll are. And, not only are they great, they are the best. See the results in this month's CITYVIEW, in print and online starting today.

Have a wonderful Wednesday, and thanks for reading.

‘Do justice. Love mercy. Walk humbly with God.’

A tribute to Judge Robert Pratt by Michael Gartner

On Friday night, Sept. 4, 2009, just before the baseball game between the Iowa Cubs and the Albuquerque Isotopes was scheduled to start, Federal Judge Robert Pratt stepped to the microphone set up near home plate at Principal Park. He was fully robed.

A court official had just announced that a special session of the United States District Court for the Southern District of Iowa was in session.

Not everyone knew what was going on, and many of the thousands of fans kept drinking their beers, eating their hotdogs and chatting with their neighbors as the judge started to speak. But Judge Pratt was not speaking mainly to the fans. He was addressing 34 men and women lined up along the base path between home plate and third base. They were from 15 countries, and the judge was swearing them in as citizens of the United States. ...

Stuart declared his love for Connie Smith when he was 10, married her 27 years later and celebrates their 30th anniversary this year. The Victorian restaurant Aposto will be open for pre concert dinner.
