Good morning to you!

Groundhog day is not a federal holiday. Not yet, anyway. But, it is worthy of a celebration or two, and you should do so today.

Yes, we observe Groundhog Day here in the USA on Feb. 2 of each year. So does Canada. The rest of the globe? Nope.

Groundhog Day is based on a simple superstition, apparently from the Pennsylvania Dutch, that if a groundhog emerges from its burrow on this day and sees its shadow, it will retreat to its den and winter will go on for six more weeks. If it does not see its shadow, spring will arrive early.

We Americans (and Canadians) are not the only ones who look to an animal for weather forecasting, though. In Germany, the badger is the forecasting animal. In Hungary, it is the bear.

As much as we all may pay attention to what a groundhog may or may not do, studies have found no consistent association between it seeing its shadow and any related arrival time of spring-like weather. But, we really don’t care. Groundhog Day is just a reason to celebrate with a rodent, or whatever a groundhog is.

Today, we simply turn on the weather reports or scroll through our phones for rain, snow or sun updates. Our ancestors looked to nature for their sources, whether they were credible or not. They said frogs croaked more when it was about to rain, and they thought crickets could tell the temperature. They said a ring around the moon meant rain or snow was coming, and, when birds fly low, storms are near. They thought, if you heard thunder in winter, you should expect snow soon. And, most reliably, they said when cows would drop to their bellies, rain would be coming.

Granny from “The Beverly Hillbillies” had her own forecasting methods, too, including her trusty weather beetle. “Fetch me a bullfrog, Jethro!” I love it. Don’t doubt Granny.

All that may sound crazy, but, meanwhile, we continue to tune in to the events each year at Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, to see what a groundhog named Punxsutawney Phil will do. Or, we watch to see what Polk County Paula, Des Moines’ notorious resident groundhog, does at the High Life Lounge (200 S.W. 2nd St., Des Moines) at 7:25 a.m. at this fun event.

And, for some odd reason, we believe in the results.

Happy Groundhog Day, and thanks for reading.

Back to the Biz
While American distilleries fret about Gen Z's moderate drinking habits, India’s brewers and distillers are booming. America’s whisky makers resell the majority of their once-used barrels to India for whiskey aging. Now there is so much beer and whiskey making going on, mostly in the high tech, high incomes centers of Bangalore and Hyderabad, that they are warring with others over water. Both Hyderabad and Bangalore are in the Deccan Plateau — a dry part of the country — and it has been hit with three years of drought. Last year,  many of Hyderabad's famous "chitikeshvara" trees failed to bloom.

Big game parties, memories

By Jackie Wilson

It’s time for the big game, and that’s the perfect reason to gather with your fellow fans around the big screen to see which team finishes the year with a championship ring. And you won’t be alone. Super Bowl Kids Reporter
The majority of football fans are content to watch the Super Bowl game on television. Tickets are limited — and expensive — so it is rare to attend the Super Bowl game in person.
Yet Miles Waage, 14, of Waukee was one of those fortunate fans. He not only attended, but appeared on television, interviewing the biggest athletes of the game. ...
