Good morning to you!

Welcome to the Friday mailbag where you will find some of the comments, questions and ideas sent recently by readers of this newsletter or our publications. They are edited for space and clarity.

“The things I've noticed that tell me I've reached a senior age, 75, is I'm often referred to as ‘Sir’ by younger people (Aging men, Jan. 22, 2026). There also seems to be a tendency for them to hold a door for me, especially as I recovered from hip surgery and used a cane. Since I don't use DART, I haven't experienced someone offering to give up a seat for me. As to the phrase ‘back in the day,’ it is a much easier descriptor than trying to identify a more specific period of time past.” - John

Thank you, sir. - Shane

“Going to Florida for the winter (Aging men, Jan. 22, 2026)!” - Chuck

It’s not just for breakfast anymore. - Shane

“I know you were discussing aging men in one of your columns last week, but I'd like to add a few realizations that you're aging — even though I'm a woman (Aging men, Jan. 22, 2026). My first moment of epiphany was when I was in a grocery store and a young boy ran up to me. His mom admonished him, saying, ‘Don't bother the nice lady.’ Nice lady? Yikes! (But I'll take it!) Here are some more examples:

   1. You are filling out a form online and have to keep scrolling to find your birth year.
   2. You tell a friend you're walking with, ‘Watch out for that step, curb, or whatever.’
   3. You reference old movies with phrases like, ‘I'll think about that tomorrow.’ (‘Gone With the Wind’)
   4. You hand a young person a note written in cursive, and they look at you blankly.
   5. Your doctor, airplane pilot, etc., all look like they're just out of college (maybe)!
   6. You groan while sitting down, standing up, or getting in or out of a vehicle.
   7. You have to look at your paper calendar at home before making a time commitment.
   8. Roller coasters and spinning rides aren't fun anymore.
   9. Toys and games from your childhood turn up in antiques stores.
   10. You remember taking Sunday drives, gazing longingly at $50K homes.

I'm married to a wonderful man just three years my senior. He's already a great-grandfather. One of my great-grandfathers was born in 1850. What's wrong with this picture? Oh, and one more thing: I own a 30-year-old black Cadillac hearse. It's not as hilarious to drive as it used to be!” - Carolyn

Thank you, Carolyn. You are the nicest lady I know who owns a hearse. - Shane

Have a fantastic Friday, and thanks for reading.

Meet Cameron Wendt
Giving back through coaching and education

By Rachel Harrington

Cameron Wendt has spent two decades as an educator. His inspiration for becoming an educator began at home.

“My dad was a teacher in the small town of Ogden, Iowa,” Wendt shares. “He was my high school social studies teacher and one of my inspirations. I also had a basketball coach who was one of my math teachers. I loved the way he taught, and I had a connection with him as my coach.”

Wendt attended Cornell College in Mount Vernon and played basketball for the college. While there, he took several math courses with the intention of becoming a math teacher.
“The math quickly became a little harder than I liked, so I switched my major to focus on social studies,” Wendt says. ...

FROM SPORTS ILLUSTRATED: Why Sean Payton and Bo Nix seem to be at odds over QB's ankle injury. The Broncos’ 2025 season came to a crushing end last Sunday afternoon, as they lost 10–7 at the hands of the Patriots with a chance to advance to Super Bowl LX on the line. Now, to be fair to Denver, it was essentially playing with house money in this one, as starting quarterback Bo Nix suffered a season-ending ankle injury the week prior, which thrust backup Jarrett Stidham—who hadn’t thrown an NFL pass in over three years—under center as it tried to maintain it's AFC-leading campaign. ... READ MORE
