Good morning to you!

Welcome to an extra edition of the mailbag where you will find some of the comments, questions and ideas sent recently by readers of this newsletter or our publications. They are edited for space and clarity.

“Having worked in emergency services that required on-duty personnel continually — and faced with staff shortages — we found more of a problem with using time off or losing it (11 federal holidays, Jan. 21, 2026). A friend and I discussed this at dinner tonight. We could only ‘bank’ so many hours or lose them. We could take overtime pay, but time off accumulated as holiday or vacation was not paid out. Most of us ended up taking unique absences such as leaving early in the hope nothing would come up. Not much recreational or involving the family occurs when you come home at 3 or 4 a.m. on a school morning. I could surprise them with breakfast or use the time to quietly dust the house. There was a constant stream of clerical work that needed to be done that was time-sensitive, which was mostly manageable. The rest just faded to yellow. Like you, we had ‘customers’ whose needs were urgent. Team efforts with our provider partners was invaluable in never letting a necessity fall through the cracks.” - John

It sounds like you cared about your job. Fortunately, most of us can find other employment if we don’t like where we are working at. - Shane

“The day I realized I was - uh - mature (an old man?), was the day I realized I no longer needed to argue about everything just to prove that I was right, because I learned that it's the passing of time, not high-volume tongues inflamed by passions, that usually tells us who was right, and seldom does it reveal that anyone had the real, total truth (Aging men, Jan. 22, 2026). Man, that acceptance made life easier and more enjoyable. If only I'd listened to Kenny Rogers years ago.” - Brad

Ah, yes. “You've got to know when to hold 'em, know when to fold 'em, know when to walk away, and know when to run.” - Shane

“What about putting on pants after your gym workout (Aging men, Jan. 22, 2026)? Do I sit on a bench and slide one leg at a time through each pant leg or do I stand thinking I can still balance enough to safely raise and get the second leg in without toppling over head first?” - Mike

If you don’t stand for something, you will fall for anything. - Shane

“I have only worn a wrist watch on two days since I retired (Winding watches, Jan. 15, 2026). The phone in my pocket knows what time it is. In my opinion, it a waste of money and time for big companies to give their retiring employees watches. The retired employee does not care what time it is after they retire. It would make more sense to give an employee a watch on the day they start, not the day they retire. - George

Great point. Every day is a Saturday for retired folks. - Shane

Have a thoughtful Thursday, and thanks for reading.

Iowa Senate Agriculture Committee is voting on an amendment that would check rising credit card swipe fees and require at least two competing networks on credit cards issued by the largest banks — injecting competition into a market dominated by two companies. That simple change could save merchants and consumers more than $17 billion annually according to Iowa Restaurant Association. The bill would prohibit credit card companies from charging interchange (“swipe”) fees on state and local taxes, ensuring fees apply only to the actual purchase price — not money businesses collect and remit on the state’s behalf. Swipe fees are now the third-largest expense for most restaurants, costing Iowa restaurants an estimated $168 million annually, including $11.75 million on sales tax alone.

Record-breaking viewership has been reported the last two years, with 127.7 million U.S. viewers last year, according to ESPN.

At first glance
If there ever was a person in street clothes who you might think would be a fan of professional football, it might be Reid Bermel.

Standing 6’7” and coming in at close to 300 pounds, Bermel is probably used to people asking him if he does one of two things: plays basketball or football.

Although he isn’t exactly an old duffer, his answer is always the same at this juncture of life. That being, neither. ...

FROM SPORTS ILLUSTRATED: Tom Brady had blunt four-word response to Bill Belichick’s Hall of Fame snub. Like everyone else in the sports world, Tom Brady was also stunned when he heard news that Bill Belichick wasn’t elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame on his first ballot. Belichick, a six-time Super Bowl champion, was among five candidates up for induction during his first year of eligibility and needed 40 votes from a 50-person panel to get into Canton. Somehow, some way, Belichick fell short, and a lot of people are understandably outraged and confounded by the result.
