Good morning to you!

Just in case you need a reason to smile today, here are 101 from liveboldandboom.com. You might find a few in there that will do the trick.

I found this website after a trip down Curiosity Lane when I wondered what actually makes people smile. My initial thoughts were the people you love, great memories, pets and some good jokes. What I learned is that finding something to make you smile requires paying attention and being more mindful as you go through your day.

Of course, what makes one person smile may not have the same effect on others, but the aforementioned website says there are some general factors that include: a positive relationship experience, a joyful or significant positive event, something humorous or witty, beauty and kindness, and a happy memory or anticipation of a positive event.

I am not going to list all 101 Things That Are Guaranteed To Make You Smile from the website, but here a few that made me grin just reading them.

Do you smile when you see a rainbow after a thunderstorm or hear the sound of birds in the morning? Or, does cooling off in the pool on a hot day, or walking barefoot through the grass in the summer, make you smile?

I smile when I get a surprise hug from my children, and seeing an elderly couple holding hands makes me grin, too.

How about something as simple as waking up feeling rested and refreshed after a good night’s sleep, or watching your kids sleep peacefully?

Speaking of kids, does seeing a baby walk for the first time make you smile? If you are adventurous, do a cartwheel like you did in your youth and try not to smile. And, when you are done doing that, eat some ice cream with your favorite toppings, or bake a tray of cookies in the oven. I am smiling — and salivating.

Does seeing a fresh coat of snow on the ground when you wake up make you smile? Or petting a dog? Or climbing into bed with clean sheets? How about looking at old photos and thinking back on the memories? Or watching a favorite old TV show? And, maybe the best one for me, enjoying a lazy day with nothing to do.

Are you smiling now? I hope so. Keep it up while you send me some things that make you smile that I didn’t list here.

Have a wonderful Wednesday, and thanks for reading.

Woebegone Wednesday
Des Moines oldest bar is being restored. The Greenwood Lounge's new owner, Connor Delaney, has closed the place this week for "a deep cleaning." The bathrooms have been made over but not their graffiti-covered walls. There is draft beer again — even a beer tap modeled by two of the famous Constance Depler dogs from the bar's murals. There are plans to have a signature cocktail named for infamous former owner Johnny Hook, who lost his license in 1951 after selling beer to minors and whiskey to an undercover cop (when the bar was licensed to sell beer only). Wine is back too. Liquor shelves are upgraded. There is more seating. The pool table has been retired. The filthy blinds, the subject of a CITYVIEW (then called Skywalker) story the last time they were new and clean, are gone. The bullet hole from the night a thief was killed after sawing through the ceiling, is still in one wall.

BELLY UP TO...
The Tribute Eatery and Bar

By Jackie Wilson

The District at Prairie Trail in Ankeny continues to evolve into a bustling mini city center. The ever-expanding area offers an abundance of shops and services, along with restaurant and drinking establishments.

One spot recently turned over. It is from the same owner, so it was a friendly exchange. The Tribute Eatery and Bar took over the former 30Hop location, while 30Hop moved across the street. The co-owners and operating partners are part of Craft Concepts, which was established in the Iowa City area. With about 25 different bars, breweries and restaurants, they also have presence in other local joints, such as Big Grove Brewery and Lua Brewing. ...

1985: Music stars gather to record “We Are the World.” The special instruction Quincy Jones sent out to the several dozen pop stars invited to participate in the recording of “We Are the World” was this: “Check your egos at the door.” Jones was the producer of a record that would eventually go on to sell more than 7 million copies and raise more than $60 million for African famine relief. But before “We Are the World” could achieve those feats, it had to be captured on tape—no simple feat considering the number of major recording artists slated to participate. With only one chance to get the recording the way he and songwriters Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie wanted it, Jones convened the marathon recording session of “We Are the World” at around 10 p.m. on the evening of Jan. 28, 1985, immediately following the conclusion of the American Music Awards ceremony held just a few miles away. … READ MORE

McAuliffe, a 37-year-old high school social studies teacher from New Hampshire, won a competition that earned her a place among the seven-member crew of the Challenger. She underwent months of shuttle training but then, beginning January 23, was forced to wait six long days as the Challenger‘s launch countdown was repeatedly delayed because of weather and technical problems.
