Good morning to you!

One might think that the recent blast of cold weather would keep drivers off the road. In decades past, maybe so. Today? Nope. We trust that our vehicles will get us from Point A to Point B safely and securely. And, most of the time, they do. Meanwhile, the U.S. Department of Transportation reports that 1,300 people are killed and 116,000 are injured annually in crashes on snowy or icy pavement. With that in mind, AAA, the auto club group, urges drivers to take the following proactive steps to stay safe on the roads:

• Check your tire pressure weekly; consider winter tires.
• Test your battery regularly; cold weather reduces power.
• Use winter-grade washer fluid; check antifreeze; change oil for winter viscosity.
• Replace wiper blades; ensure heater works.
• Inspect brakes; clean and check all lights.

Despite this advice, most of us don’t check those items. We simply hop in our vehicles and go. I am guilty, too. The problems are real, though. Consider the following top reasons for roadside assistance calls.

• Dead batteries
• Tire issues
• Vehicle crashes/sliding off the road
• Running out of fuel
• Car lockouts and frozen locks

OK, fine. You inspect all the potential problems, and you still get stranded in your car. Now what? AAA says to stay calm and take the following steps.

• Stay inside your vehicle for shelter unless it is unsafe to do so.
• Turn on hazard lights to increase visibility.
• Call for help and share your GPS location.
• Run the engine sparingly (about 10 minutes per hour) and crack a window for ventilation.
• Layer clothing, stay hydrated, and conserve your phone battery.

Sharing this information reminded me of my father telling me that Iowans should not have white vehicles, as they can’t be seen as well in winter weather on the roadways and ditches. And then I realized that I have a white truck.

I do heed Dad’s other winter driving advice, though. I pack snow boots, a heavy coat, insulated coveralls, a stocking hat, scarf and mittens in my vehicle, and I have had to use them a few times. How about you? What’s in your winter driving safety kit, if anything? Send me a note and let me know.

Have a mindful Monday, and thanks for reading.

Fisher is on a mission to open doors for others

By Cyote Williams

Robert Fisher has become a local celebrity in Adel — not for acting, singing or dancing, but for his constant drive and passion for his mission, which is helping to open doors for others. Fisher has been working tirelessly to get businesses in his community to add button powered handicap accessible doors. It all started when he moved to the area.

“When I moved here, my post office did not have a handicap button. I decided to call the headquarters and tell them about it. And they denied me. So, I decided to do everything I can to put one there, and they have no choice but to put one there for other people to get in,” Fisher said. ...
