Good morning to you!

Welcome to the Friday mailbag where you will find some of the comments, questions and ideas sent recently by readers of this newsletter or our publications. They are edited for space and clarity.

“Loved your commentary on watches (Winding watches, Jan. 15, 2026). I had a brief stint carrying a pocket watch because the metals in watch bands provoked a skin allergy.” - John

Many years ago, I developed a lump the size of a marble on the wrist where I wore my watch. I was told it was a cyst of some sort. I quit wearing that watch, and it went away. I am not sure if it was the watch or those dastardly microwave ovens. - Shane

“I wear an Apple watch every day (Winding watches, Jan. 15, 2026). The other day, it was not charged so I did not wear it. I was meeting with a customer who I scheduled tight with my next appointment. I looked at his watch to see what time it was and was shocked when it showed the exact time of my next appointment! I shared my dilemma, and he shared that the time was wrong because the battery was dead. He said he only wore that watch that day because the color matched his shoes.” - Jo

Well, we all have our reasons. Personally, I like to know what time it is. - Shane

“I really enjoyed and agreed with the Stray Thoughts column (CITYVIEW, January 2026). Thanks.” - George

Randy Evans should be on everyone’s read list, whether you agree with what he writes or not. - Shane

“Shane, you set off my biggest public restroom ick of all time with your column (Need more than one, Jan. 20, 2026). The restrooms that only have air hand dryers but a door you have to pull to open!” - Kris

I am still trying to figure out that little kick plate opener on the bottom of the doors. - Shane

“English muffins have lost their thickness, and it takes the skill of a surgeon to slice them for the toaster (Need more than one, Jan. 20, 2026). You could just put them in the toaster and heat them as is, but you'd miss the butter, peanut butter and jelly-filled crevices taste explosions. Loaves of bread seem to be shrinking, too, and it's not unusual to find holes in them.” - John

Holes? In bread? Are you sure you are not eating donuts? - Shane

“Since I am retired, I really don't care how many federal holidays there are (11 federal holidays, Jan. 21, 2026). They don't impact my life much. My only complaint comes on these holidays when my normally peaceful exercise class at 9 a.m. is suddenly packed and no longer peaceful.” - Sharon

Well, the federal employees may not be working, but at least they are focusing on their health. - Shane

Have a fantastic Friday, and thanks for reading.

Eat more seafood. Octopus could well be the next large-scale commercially farmed seafood. Farming in Spain is underway and well received by the European press. Octopus is virtually all protein, affordable and, speaking strictly for me, delicious. The pictured tease here is from Oak Park where it was Josper-roasted and served with crispy potatoes, Kalamata olive aioli, and tomato onion sofrito. Oak Park chef Ian Robertson was named a "Best Chef Midwest" semifinalist by James Beard Awards. That means Top 20. This was his first year of eligibility.
