Good morning to you!

As we men age, we experience realizations we would not have dreamed about in prior years. Women experience new realizations, too, but they are clearly different. Some of the men’s realizations are in the form of questions. Some hit like a two-by-four across the forehead. See if any of these relate to you — or an aging man you know.

1. Asking yourself if you really need to pick that up. Let’s face it. Bending over isn’t as easy as it used to be for aging men. I remember watching my father-in-law getting ice out of our refrigerator and dropping an ice cube on the floor. He stared at it for a few seconds, and then he kicked it under the refrigerator and walked away. I laughed. It’s not so funny now.

2. Pulling an “all-nighter” has a different meaning. Partying all night. Working all night. Studying all night. Doing anything all night. Those days are over. Now, an all-nighter for us aging men means we don’t have to get up to use the bathroom at 2 a.m.

3. Wondering if you qualify for senior discounts. In my younger years, I didn’t think giving cheaper prices to old people was fair. It was age discrimination, at least in my mind. Today, I am scanning the menus before I order to see if I qualify. You never know.

4. Realizing it has been decades since you have been asked to show an ID to buy beer. Admittedly, I don’t buy much beer anymore. I don't buy much of anything. But, when I am asked for an ID, it seems to only be so the store can scan, use and sell my data — until they realize I am an old guy who doesn’t buy much.

5. Not caring about being trendy. I used to be embarrassed by some of my dad’s choices in clothing. Today, my kids must feel that same way about me. I really don’t care, though, as long as I am comfortable. And, Sam’s Club sells comfortable, affordable and wrinkle-free pants with expandable waistlines.

6. Converting to the numeral birthday candle. I am not sure what year it happened, but somewhere along the line my wife came to the conclusion that there can be too many candles on a cake. So, the single candle with the age on it became the norm.

7. Using the term “back in the day.” When exactly was “the day”? And, at what age does a man start saying that? I’m not sure, but it happened sometime — back in the day.

OK, which ones did I miss? Send me a note and let me know. In the meantime, have a thoughtful Thursday and thank you for reading.

Domino's wins, but are they a bully?
Domino's won the year among chain restaurants with total sales growth of 6.2% from a year earlier, through September. Their U.S. same-store sales grew 5.2% in the period. Domino's soared while most other chains struggled to outperform 2024. A Wall Street Journal  story investigating the success attributed a lot of it to surprise sales — like the recent $9.99 pizzas that were discontinued "because they were too successful." Domino's is actually willing to lose money to keep their competition down — but only for a little while.

Domino's spokespeople declined to share how much of its sales stem from that deal, but admitted that it ended because of its popularity among consumers and franchisees, he said. Domino’s likes to keep competition “on its toes” with such new offers, announcing them at unexpected times, like August in this case. Realistically, other chains don’t have the capability to offer the same price points for long periods. (WSJ, Restaurant Business)

DES MOINES FORGOTTEN
Nudity, sex and controversial politics

By Kristian Day

12/31/2025

The past 12 months were wild ones, and this didn’t fully sink in until a reader approached me at the dungeon synth show I promoted at the Locals bar here in Des Moines. He was a former Des Moines Register reporter and shared with me that he attended Mini-X theater in the late 1960s and early 1970s. What amazed me was how many other people had sent me emails and messages about their visit to the same place. Besides attending the Mini-X, many shared one other similar detail: They all seemingly saw the Swedish erotic and political film, “I Am Curious (Yellow),” directed by Vilgot Sjöman, at the Eastown on Grand Avenue. This movie shares much of the same social unrest that many Americans feel today. ...
