Good morning to you!

A few years ago, I decided to invest in some better wrist watches. My trusty Timex took its final licking and just quit ticking. And, I decided that if Apple wanted to track my every movement on my Apple Watch, then the Big Tech company should pay me rather than the other way around. I gave that watch to my daughter, and she wore it in a hot tub. Problem solved.

I had never owned a high-end watch, so I decided I would finally ante up and buy one. I found a used one in the brand and the color of dial I wanted, and I appeared to be set. The problem was that this watch was too nice — and too heavy — to wear for everyday use.

So, I sought out another watch that would better meet my needs, and I found a field watch I liked. It is durable and reliable and designed for outdoor activities. It has a simple, legible dial and rugged construction. And, I have to wind it. Yes, wind it.

I get it. Winding a watch seems archaic in today’s day and age, but I kind of like the process. A co-worker saw me winding it the other day and remarked how he hadn’t seen anyone do that in years. I am good with that.

There is some irony in this watch-winding task. Each morning, when I typically set it, I ask my Amazon Alexa device what time it is so I have it set correctly. I may not be as old-school as I want to be.

Clearly, fewer people are wearing wrist watches today. It is difficult to determine an exact percentage, but based on various studies, it is estimated that about 35-40% of the global population wear a watch of some sort. We Americans appear to like our technology more than the foreigners, as about 26% of us use a smartwatch or a fitness tracker compared to 22.5% of the world's population.

Meanwhile, every once in a while, I rummage through my top dresser drawer and find a plastic pocket watch I had as a child. I begged my mother for one, as I wanted to be like my grandpa, who kept his shiny timepiece in the front pocket of his bib overalls every day. Mom went with a more economical option for me. My version was encased in black plastic with a white dial, and I cracked the lens on a bicycle spill, but it still keeps time — when I wind it.

I am not sure why, but I smile every time I wind any watch. It makes me think of carefree days, simpler tasks and a wonderful grandpa who always made time for a young boy.

Have a thoughtful Thursday, and thanks for reading.

BUSINESS FEATURE
Start with the legal basics when building a business

By Lindsey Giardino

“I used an attorney who focused on intellectual property for my trademark, and a different attorney who focused on startups to change my corporate structure.”
— Nora Crosthwaite

Launching a small business is often fueled by passion and a vision, but nothing replaces the legal foundations that keep a business protected and positioned to grow.

Whether for a solo consultant, a tech startup founder or a brick-and-mortar shop owner, the legal to-do list is longer and more consequential than many expect. Choosing a business structure, securing trademarks, drafting contracts, setting up payroll, navigating sales tax, protecting confidential information and planning for eventual succession are all part of the list. It can be overwhelming, but they are all risk-management tools that shield business owners from financial loss and future headaches. ...
