Good morning to you!

I remember being a younger man who would become frustrated with the older folks who would vote NO on seemingly every issue at the ballot box for one — and only one — reason: they did not want their property taxes to increase. They voted NO on new public school buildings. They voted NO on public swimming pools. They voted NO on public safety buildings. NO. NO. NO.

As that young man, I didn't want to fork over more of my hard-earned money to the government either, but the benefits most often outweighed the costs, at least for me, at least at the time.

Today, I am starting to understand the point of view of the no-voters. When you are young and live in an apartment, you don’t understand property taxes because you don’t pay them, at least not directly. Even in your first home, taxes don’t eat you up as much. But, as you invest more in a home, receive the tax increase notices and write larger checks year after year, you begin to ask more questions, and appropriately so.

Of course, property taxes are just a slice of the taxing pie. We Americans pay all kinds of other taxes including income tax, payroll tax, sales tax and capital gains tax. These taxes are collected at the federal, state and local levels to fund government services and programs. And, those government services and programs seem to keep getting bigger and bigger.

But who pays these taxes? On the federal level alone, the top 10% of income earners in the U.S. pay more than 60% of all federal taxes, with the top 1% alone contributing about 40%. Some say they should pay even more. But, how much more?

Of course, if you don’t pay any federal income tax, you like things just the way they are. And, about 40% of American households don’t. That’s right. Four out of every 10 do not pay any federal income tax, often due to low income or tax credits. However, as many point out, nearly all Americans pay other types of taxes, such as sales taxes, payroll taxes and state taxes.

Back to those pesky property taxes. In case you are curious, Iowa ranked 10th highest in the nation in 2025 in terms of effective property tax rate, according to Rocket Mortgage, at 1.43%. New Jersey had the highest at 2.23%, and Hawaii had the lowest at .27%.

There is no question that most of us pay a lot of taxes. And, there is no question that we all receive many great benefits from them. The question, though, is how much is too much? The answer is quite personal, as one size does not fit all. Thank goodness, we do all get to vote.

Have a watchful Wednesday, and thanks for reading.

Woebegone Wednesday
Is this the beginning of the end for Kraft Macaroni and Cheese? It first sold in 1937 for 19 cents a box, the creation of Chicago cheese monger James L. Kraft. He started by selling cheese from a horse-drawn wagon. Marketed as "a meal for four," it caught on during World War II and ruled supermarket shelves through the growing up years of six generations. With a billion dollars in annual sales, Kraft grew complacent about defending it from new challenges. Those began seriously a decade ago when General Mills bought Annie's, an organic M&C product.

Kraft Mac & Cheese's market share is down to 39%, from 45% in 2022, according to Circana. Goodles, pitching itself as a fun, healthier take on an old classic, now has 6% of the market with macaroni infused with protein and nutrients from spinach, pumpkin and kale. It sells for double Kraft's price. Goodles is targeting a different group — young adults secretly eating mac and cheese. In the 40 weeks ended Nov. 2, Kraft mac and cheese sales declined 4% from the year-earlier period. (WSJ)

Cheba Hut brought its brownie back after a brief retirement. Company marketing says it's perfect when paired with toasted sandwiches. Cheba Hut also sells THC beverages.

STRAY THOUGHTS
Who deserves sympathy should not depend on politics

By Randy Evans

Truth should be measured by evidence, not by political allegiance.  Can’t we all agree on that?

With that in mind, a useful question for citizens and journalists to ask at times like this is simple: “Help me understand …”

The phrasing invites the person being questioned to explain his or her views on some matter of interest without the questioner coming across as accusatory. ...
