Good morning to you!

A trip to the grocery store reminds us of how much the cost of food items has sharply risen. Fortunately, we are seeing significant cost savings at the gas pump to offset some of it. This got me wondering, though, what items are cheaper today than they were in years gone by? Some of the answers may surprise you.

First, and most obvious, are television sets. Despite them becoming larger and having more features, their prices keep dropping. According to historyfacts.com, when RCA debuted its first color TV set in 1954 with a 15-inch screen, it retailed for $1,000. Today, consumers would struggle to find any TV that would have a price tag of $1,000, especially with the Super Bowl specials.

The second is airfare. Yes, most all of us seem to complain about the cost to fly, but, in comparison to the past, it is quite a deal today. Commercial air travel was once a luxurious experience only the wealthy could afford. Also according to historyfacts.com, in 1941, an average flight from Los Angeles to Boston would have cost more than $5,000 in today’s money. It’s no wonder so few people chose air travel then and so many do now.

The third is clothing. Clearly not all clothes are cheaper, as a person can seemingly spend as much as he or she wants on the stuff to cover our bodies. But, clothing, as a whole, is cheaper today. In the 1950s, the average American family spent about 10% to 12% of their household income on clothing, according to historyfacts.com. Today, that figure has dropped to about 3%. So, why are clothes cheaper today? The answer is that most clothing production has moved overseas where labor costs are lower and production output is higher. Sad but true.

The fourth are bananas. Yes, bananas. Consider this. Bananas first became available in the U.S. following the Civil War. According to historyfacts.com, they sold for about 10 cents apiece at the time — that’s about $3 each today. Now, that’s bananas.

Fifth are smartphones. I realize that the cost to buy a new iPhone is astronomical, but, as a whole, smartphone prices have dropped in recent years. In fact, smartphones have seen a decrease of 23.9% since January 2022, according to marketwatch.com. Those savings are something to call home about.

OK, I surely missed some. Send me a note and let me know what items you have found to be cheaper today than in years past.

Have a thrifty Thursday, and thanks for reading.

Getting down on the bears

Bad ass bears are headlining the news in Japan almost daily the last two months. Bear attacks in Akita Prefecture of Japan have: killed 14 people, injured 330, reduced civic traffic to COVID Era levels; encouraged restaurants to get rid of automatically opening doors; inspired women to attach rows of bells to their backpacks when going out; created new laws permitting rifles and killing of aggressive bears; and inspired several insurance companies to issue “bear insurance” for tourists and businesses — to cover damages, including canceled hotel reservations, which are piling up, up to $50,000. (NHK - Tokyo)

Bear meat is legal to eat in the U.S. but illegal to sell or buy. Bears are often full of parasites that can make humans seriously ill, or dead. Only eat bear meat that has been cooked to 165 degrees.

Don’t eat road kill until further instructions are available

Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD), aka “zombie deer disease" has been found in Arkansas and Tennessee. Humans can contract “mad cow disease” from eating venison with CWD. It is fatal.

Meet Melissa Stone
Guiding students to success

By Rachel Harrington

Ever since Melissa Stone was little, she has had a knack for working with children, and she used those skills as a Sunday School teacher, a youth group leader, a babysitter, a daycare teacher and a nanny. After working as a middle school math teacher for sixth graders, she moved to an elementary setting, teaching for a total of nine years as a classroom teacher.

Stone noticed that she already taught many concepts in her classroom that are taught by a school counselor. Additionally, she saw a need to teach social and emotional skills to her students which included: soft skills, life skills and how to make friends, work with others and be successful in school. She also saw an increase in mental health needs among students, which inspired her to move into the counseling realm of education. Now, Stone is in her ninth year of school counseling and sixth year of counseling at Maple Grove Elementary School. …
