Good morning to you!

“Always deliver more than expected.”

That’s a great quote from Larry Page, the co-founder of Google. He certainly knows a thing or two about delivering more than expected. I still remember using Yahoo as a search engine several decades ago and having a co-worker tell me about this upstart option called Google. The rest, as they say, is history.

Meanwhile, many people don’t deliver more than what is expected. They do the bare minimum and then watch TV or play video games or surf social media sites. And then, they often complain about others who are getting ahead. But why?

According to abmotivation.com, there are three reasons why people do the bare minimum.

The first is a fear of failure. By setting the bar low, we minimize the risk of not meeting expectations or disappointing others. The site says this fear can be strong in individuals who have a perfectionist mindset or who have experienced past failures or criticism. Sound familiar?

The second is a lack of motivation. We may not find the task at hand interesting or challenging enough to warrant putting in extra effort, the website says. In some cases, we may be dealing with personal issues or stressors that make it difficult to focus or stay motivated. We have all been there, too.

The third is a lack of confidence. When we do not believe in our abilities or worth, we may feel that we are not capable of achieving anything more than the bare minimum. This can become a self-fulfilling prophecy, according to the site, as our lack of effort reinforces our negative beliefs about ourselves. Even the most confident of us have doubts at times.

The consequences of only doing the bare minimum are real, as it can limit our potential and limit our opportunities for success and growth, both personally and professionally.

So, take a page from Larry Page today and deliver more than what is expected.

Have a wonderful Wednesday, and thanks for reading.

Woebegone Wednesday

Tyson Foods is closing one of its major beef processing plants Jan. 17, in Lexington, Nebraska, with 3,000 workers. It is also reducing another beef plant in Amarillo to one shift affecting 1,700 workers there. Tyson Foods, JBS, Cargill and National Beef, which is owned by Brazil's MBRF, process about 85% of this country’s beef.

Restrictions on Mexican cattle imports — due to a flesh-eating parasite — and tariffs on Brazilian beef imports have helped keep U.S. prices elevated. Omaha Beef predicts $10/pound hamburger in 2026.

Chicken processors, including Tyson, have benefited from cheaper livestock feed — the top expense when raising poultry — due to falling grain prices. Higher beef prices have turned more consumers toward chicken nuggets and wings, helping lift Tyson’s chicken sales volumes 4% in the fourth quarter.
