Good morning to you!

I have served on a national board that represents the free paper publishing industry for about 25 years. That ended yesterday.

I decided not to run for reelection to the Association of Community Publishers (ACP) board and allow others to gain the experiences that I obtained from this commitment to the industry.

Regardless of where you work or what industry you are in, being involved in a trade association is important. I truly believe that.

I would have to take my shoes off to count the number of roles and committees I was involved in with ACP. Countless hours. Countless memories. Countless lessons.

A few decades ago, I was the youngest guy in the room. I sat quietly and listened to a group of people I deeply respected. And, I learned. I didn’t always understand the decisions, and I certainly didn’t agree with them all, but I assumed I someday would. Eventually, I did. Mostly. I still didn’t agree with all the decisions, but I learned to ask questions. Lots of them. I sometimes made others uncomfortable in doing so, but I asked them anyway.

Every industry is changing, and the publishing industry is, too. When classified revenues were at their peak, our trade association was flush with cash. We put on over-the-top conferences. We had big-name speakers. We paid rebates back to publishers. Then, classified revenues tanked, and the association struggled to find another option that could replace it. So, we learned to run on a shoestring and reduced our expenses to match what we could realistically afford. That’s a good and necessary exercise for any business operator to go through.

The types of publications in our industry have changed, too. The association was once full of large-scale shopper publishers, some with millions of circulation. Most all of those have closed, and many of the remaining shopper publications converted to free community newspapers and magazines, much like what we publish at Big Green Umbrella Media.

Not too many years ago, our industry had two national trade associations. One allowed “corporate” publications as members. The other represented the “independents.” They competed fiercely. One was running out of money. The other was running out of members. They appropriately combined into one association a few years ago. I was proud to be part of that merger, as I had the unique experience to serve on both boards.

I was fortunate to have two bosses in my early years who encouraged my involvement in the trade associations. One even required it. I learned from some incredible people, too many to name in this column. I know many of them subscribe to the Daily Umbrella, and I want to thank them all for allowing me to be part of something wonderful. I look forward to what the industry will become in the years ahead and what a new breed of publishers and board members will bring to the table. Hopefully, they will ask a lot of questions, too.

Have a thoughtful Thursday, and thanks for reading.

Salt expands the English language
Campbell’s fired Vice President of Information Technology Martin Bally last month after he was caught on tape saying the company’s soup was “highly processed,” was "s..t made for f...ing poor people” and used lab-grown and 3D printed chicken. The company said the claims were “patently absurd.” WSJ reviewed the soup and concluded that high amounts of sodium were the most concerning ingredient. (But all canned foods have that.) Campbell’s said it has many varieties of lower-sodium soup, as well as unsalted versions to help consumers meet their unique dietary needs.

There is a word now explaining why too much salt is in canned foods — nutrition researchers call it "hyperpalatable" because excess salt makes people eat too much.

JOE'S NEIGHBORHOOD
Hanging it all out at the holidays

By Joe Weeg

My mom was a hoarder. And I don’t say that harshly. Listen, I’ve got my own problems. And my mom was not the worst hoarder I’ve ever seen. But her home does make for quite the excavation as we prep her house to sell after her death. For example, over there on that far wall in the basement are hundreds of cottage cheese containers in case you need somewhere to put that leftover turkey. And here are old newspapers dating back 40 years that, as my mom used to say may (or may not!) contain important information. And what if you suddenly want to can 200 jars of tomatoes? I’ve got the canner and the jars and the lids just for you. ...

Cooking up success
Anderson serves up excellence at JHS

By Lindsey Giardino

Johnston High School family and consumer science teacher Claire Anderson says many moments in her teaching career have made her proud. But one recent recognition stands out. This year, she was named the 2025 Iowa ProStart Educator of Excellence by the Iowa Restaurant Association Education Foundation.

“This is a huge honor,” she shares. “I could not be selected without the hard work and dedication displayed by my students.”

Since 2018, Anderson has taught culinary arts at JHS in a classroom equipped with modern industrial kitchen equipment — a dream job of sorts for her. She became passionate about culinary classes during her student teaching experience at Iowa State University. Before attending Iowa State, Anderson studied at Marshalltown Community College for two years, which proved to be especially valuable as a career and technical education (CTE) teacher. ...
