Good morning to you!

My column on the decline of Christmas cards yesterday spurred some discussion on a few related topics that made me giggle. I hope they do the same for you.

Cheryl told me about a friend who gave her husband the same anniversary card for seven years in a row. Not a new version of the same card. The same card… with the same note. On year seven, he remarked how the card looked familiar. The first six? No clue.

Lee openly recycles birthday cards, and she doesn't hide it. She simply draws one line through the old message and writes in a new one. Her process reminds me of the days when we would check out library books and be able to read the names of the people who checked them out prior. If that manual process was still in place today, privacy restrictions would surely ban it. Lee still makes it work.

Rich said he had a friend who was gifted a movie on DVD for Christmas one year, and the person who gave it to him noticed a year later that it was never unwrapped. So, she took it, wrapped it and gifted it again. And again the next year. And again the next year. Maybe not surprisingly, the recipient was equally pleased each year.

As adults, my sister and I were doing laundry at our father’s home, and in putting some of his clothes away in his dresser, we discovered numerous shirts we had given to him years prior for Father’s Days, his birthdays and Christmas. Each shirt was still in the original plastic. We discussed regifting these to him and expected the same results mentioned in the prior stories, but my kind sister instead unwrapped them, washed them, ironed them and hung them in his closet. Dad commented that he thought we put some of our clothes in his closet by mistake.

A few years back, a co-worker’s husband had flowers sent to her at our office. She had not seen them yet, so I thought it would be funny to move the flowers to my wife’s desk with a new note from me. I let Jolene in on the gag, but I got busy and forget to tell the co-worker and I did not put the flowers back. Meanwhile, she talked with her husband, and he asked if she liked the flowers he sent. Of course, she replied, “What flowers?” This prompted an angry call from her husband to the florist. In hindsight, this joke turned out to not be so funny, and I had to send a few flowers to make it right.

All of these stories just go to prove that the adage appears to be true — it’s not the gift but the thought that counts.

Thanks for reading, and have a wonderful Wednesday.

DES MOINES FORGOTTEN
Ingersoll Wine & Spirits

By Kristian Day

I was in Ingersoll Wine & Spirits back in October to pick up a couple bottles of wine as a treat to myself for getting through a challenging commercial project. Full disclosure: I am not much of a drinker these days. My brother in-law loves to talk about whiskeys with me, but it is difficult for me to pretend to be interested. I think IPAs taste gross, and my only preferences with wine are that it is not from Iowa and has a cork. The only time drinking becomes a priority is if I am attending a wedding, and I am trying to forget that I am there. But, that night I walked into Ingersoll, I was feeling proud. They had a wine tasting happening, and the ambassador from the Okoboji distributor got me for $60 on two bottles of wine. It reminded me of the few wine-tasting events that Ingersoll used to throw around the holiday season. ...

Handmade for the holidays
Residents share the joy of gifts from the heart.

By Ashley Rullestad

The quilt from a beloved aunt. Knitted sweaters from Grandma. A child’s table and chairs crafted in a relative’s workshop. A personalized ornament. Handmade gifts are unique, but, more than that, they are gifts of time spent in the crafting, imagination in their design and love in their giving.

Holiday decor
Melissa Jackivon had an idea to make crafted sticks with unique items to spruce up her outdoor planters. She made the first ones for her own pots about 12 years ago, and people often commented on them and asked where she got them. As a former elementary teacher and mom to two (now grown) girls, she has been the crafty type, and this was something she came across and knew she could make herself. She has since made the sticks for friends and family. ...

FROM SPORTS ILLUSTRATED: Patrick Mahomes undergoes successful surgery on two knee ligaments. Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes suffered a season-ending knee injury during his team’s loss to the Chargers last Sunday, marking the true rock bottom of an already catastrophic season in Kansas City. Upon being rolled up on by a Los Angeles defender while trying to make a play, the signal-caller remained on the grass and holding his left knee before ultimately being helped off the field and into the locker room by team trainers. He did not return to the game, and the Chiefs were officially eliminated from playoff contention. ... READ MORE
