Good morning to you!

"Most men think that working harder will save them. But, hard work without evolution eventually becomes self-sabotage.”

Those are the words of Sam Neider, a former wrestler, an entrepreneur and the founder of “The Room,” a website created with a goal to help wrestlers “get better at life.”

I learned about him from an online post where he boldly explained why it may be time for Head Wrestling Coach Tom Brands to leave the University of Iowa program. You don't need to agree with him on that point, and you don't have to understand or appreciate wrestling to connect with what he writes about. But, if you do, it hits home even more.

“Iowa hasn’t evolved. Tom Brands is still running the old (Dan) Gable system — the grind, the push, the pressure, the outwork everyone mindset, the focus on winning. That worked in an earlier era. But, the sport has changed. (Penn State Head Wrestling Coach) Cael Sanderson brought a whole new philosophy into wrestling — more fun, more flow, more growth mindset, more alignment. He’s prioritized process over outcome. He’s focused on scoring points, not winning. And, the results speak for themselves.”

Neider explains how life works the same way and how every new stage of life demands a new version of you.

“When your child becomes a toddler, you must evolve. When they become a teen, you must evolve again. When your business grows, you must evolve. When life hits you with challenges you’ve never seen before, you must evolve again. There is no neutral. You’re either evolving or devolving… The world is changing faster than ever. If you're using the old version of you to create a new level of life, it won’t work.”

But, if hard work is not the solution, what is?

“Alignment is the problem, and evolution is the solution,” he says. “If you’re feeling the pressure of a new season in life or business, that pressure is calling you to become the next version of yourself. The expanded version. The aligned version. The evolved version.”

That’s an important message for all of us — wrestlers, non-wrestlers, male, female, young or old — who may be taking the same approaches and expecting different results. It hit home with me, as much of our company’s past successes have been based on the simple principle that we worked harder than our competitors. Yes, we aligned and evolved, too, but we have new challenges today that require different views, and most of those deal with a changing employee base that is being stretched in ways outside the job that we didn’t have to deal with even a decade ago. The answers are not simple, but we clearly have to consider different approaches.

The need for hard work will never go away, and Neider’s comments likely won’t change Tom Brands’ approach to coaching, but they did make me at least think more about our approach to alignment and evolution at work and at home. I hope they give you some perspective, too.

Have a terrific Tuesday, and thank you for reading.

Our wonder bargain of the week comes from Chef Pancho Bloomburg, who has taken his Yaqui wisdom and culinary skills from Principal Financial headquarters here to Lansing, Iowa's river visions. A great value hunter, Panch turned us on to Louisiana Supreme hot sauces back when Price Chopper had a Dollar Aisle. That name is gone but many of its best deals are still priced at only a bit more than $1. We think these are as good as any hot sauces for a fraction of the price.

’Tis the season of gratitude
Residents share stories of thankfulness.

By Ashley Rullestad

This time of year encourages us to be grateful for our blessings: family, friends, health, a warm home, festive meals and gatherings, and so much more. Some find ourselves thankful for an unexpected helping hand when we most need it. From a neighbor shoveling the sidewalk to a nonprofit offering supplies and hope, we often see the spirit of kindness around us. And, some are motivated by their gratefulness to pay it forward, spreading the holiday spirit even farther.
