Good morning to you!

Well, I finally got it. Not a cold. Not the flu. Not COVID. None of those negative things, thank goodness. Instead, I got something quite positive — the Christmas spirit!

Maybe ironically, or maybe not, I got the Christmas spirit somewhat like Ebenezer Scrooge did — in a group of three.

I met my first Christmas spirit Friday night after work when Jolene and I attended Clive's Annual Mayor's Tree Lighting at the Clive City Hall/Public Library complex. It was a few incredible hours of activities, treats and music. In addition to the wonderful tree lighting by Mayor John Edwards, there were crafts, cookie decorating, face painting, lighted hayrack rides, hot chocolate, kettle corn, multiple musical performances, and, of course, Santa and Mrs. Claus. The famous Greenbelt Goats were even there. Every kid seemed to love it, and so did I.

Saturday morning, before the snowfall, I made the trek to Panora and caught my second Christmas spirit at the community’s Breakfast with Santa, where I filled up on pancakes and sausage while watching the kids work on crafts in Santa’s workshop. A few elves were shaking in their boots as Santa almost didn’t make his way to Panora. But, fortunately, he did, and he greeted the many children who had their wish lists ready. It was a beautiful community event, much like the ones I remember as a child.

My third Christmas spirit came in truly spectacular fashion, as Jolene and I joined our daughter, her husband and our grandchild for the Dazzling in the District holiday event in Ankeny on Saturday. Grandson Cal had his photo taken with Santa and Mrs. Claus, and he met Buddy the Elf and the Grinch. We all did a little shopping and a lot of dining. While the snow fell, we gathered with hundreds of others for a beautiful tree lighting that had a finale like no other — fireworks! It was quite an amazing experience that you don’t see every day in Iowa.

Three communities. Three events. Three phenomenal experiences, each in its own way.

Of course, nearly every community today — large and small — seems to go all out with Christmas events. Some are paid for by your tax dollars, some are funded by sponsors, and some happen thanks to complete volunteer efforts. But, all of them have one goal in mind, and that is to get the Christmas spirit inside each of the participants.

Mission accomplished.

Have a magnificent Monday, and thanks for reading.

Wall Street Journal's David Waner reported the challenges facing Starbuck's new wunderkind, Brian Niccol, who previously took Taco Bell and Chipotle to wild new heights. Waner suggests "A wave of coffee chains with national ambitions — not to mention fast-food chains including McDonald’s and Taco Bell — are undercutting Starbucks’ dominance. This competition reflects both the category’s growth and the realization across the restaurant industry that caffeinated beverages are simply too profitable to ignore. It is also being driven by evolving tastes, especially among members of Gen Z." Waner also wrote that the biggest competition is Des Moines' newest coffee shop, Dutch Bros, and their 1,000 (and growing exponentially) drive-thru shops. "Its formula is simple: brightly flavored, highly customizable drinks served by upbeat 'broistas' who try to remember your name and are probably on too much caffeine." Des Moines' Dutch Bros is under construction at 4800 S.E. 14th St.

Meanwhile, Starbucks’ employees in Des Moines and Iowa City went on strike.

Roughly 80% of beverage occasions are consumed on the go in the U.S., according to a Dutch Bros press release. They operate drive-thru only shops.

Tom Rosborough and Zachary Quick install Jordan Nassar’s” Bethlehem-In-The-Galilee,” 2025 in the Art Center’s I. M. Pei building.

Established in 1948, the Des Moines Art Center has brought world-famous works of art right into central Iowa’s backyard. Whether it be at an exhibit inside one of the three unique buildings, which are considerable artworks themselves, or the renowned John and Mary Pappajohn Sculpture Park in downtown, the Art Center has made the Hawkeye State’s capital a destination for exceptional artwork.

Its permanent collection contains works from names such as Andy Warhol, Claude Monet, Georgia O’Keeffe and Grant Wood to name a few, and that does not count the various exhibits that make a temporary stay inside its walls. ...

More than a secretary
Sarchet builds connections at North Polk High.

By Lindsey Giardino

Laura Sarchet has a “teacher’s heart” and wanted to work with kids. She went to college for elementary education with a special education endorsement, but, after graduating, she began a career in finance until she and her husband, Rob, decided she would stay home while their three girls were young.

When her daughters started school at North Polk, Sarchet volunteered in their classrooms and began subbing as a paraeducator at the elementary level.

“I just loved being with the kids but also having the freedom and opportunity to be with my girls during those early years of development,” she explains. ...

The Big 12 has fined both programs $500,000 for choosing not to compete in bowl games. The conference’s statement acknowledged that the schools both just went through coaching hires, but cited the importance of “fulfilling its contractual obligations to its bowl partners.” The Big 12 said this matter is over, meaning the schools must’ve agreed to pay the hefty fine. ...
