Good morning to you!

Welcome to the Friday mailbag where you will find some of the comments, questions and ideas sent recently by readers of this newsletter or our publications. They are edited for space and clarity.

“Beautiful note this morning (Wild horses, Nov. 26, 2025). Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family.” - Joe

In my mind, I believe we can’t truly give thanks for what we have without also acknowledging what pulls us away from it. - Shane

“Hi, Shane. I remember Susan Boyle singing this song on ‘America’s Got Talent’ (Wild horses, Nov. 26, 2025). Beautiful!” - Diane

I believe that was the Rolling Stones’ song with the same name. Another great song, and another great voice. - Shane

“I enjoyed your description of setting up and decorating Christmas trees when you were little (With or without tinsel, Dec. 1, 2025). My mom had a set of metal bells and a set of ceramic bells to adorn our Christmas tree. When I was just learning to walk, Mom would position those bells around the bottom branches of the tree. Then, if I got close enough to the tree, they would sound off and rat me out. Even if Mom wasn't in the room, at the sound of those bells, she would yell, ‘Bobby, get out of the tree!’ My sister still has the ceramic bells, and the metal ones can be found on my fireplace mantel.” - Bob

Young kids can certainly be problematic around Christmas trees, but a curious cat provides the most entertainment. - Shane

“I feel your pain! Every year in October, I get out the dozens of light strings we use outside to test them before we start decorating in November (Half lit, Dec. 2, 2025). There are always several that only half work. I find it challenging to go through a logical process to fix all that can be fixed. Of course, when we start decorating, a couple will not be working even though I hacked them all. It takes hours but I do it while watching TV since it is a mindless task mostly. Even the newer LED lights guaranteed for centuries have issues at times. But, I sort of enjoy the challenge.” - Chuck

Why is it that the dome light in my truck (that I use every day) can last for years, but I can’t get a string of Christmas lights to work past one season? - Shane

Have a fantastic Friday, and thanks for reading.

A Rabbit Room is coming to Johnston. The original Rabbit Room was an attachment to a larger pub in Oxford, England, where the Oxford Inklings, including C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien, met in the 1930s and 40s. After singer-songwriter Andrew Peterson visited the Oxford home of C.S. Lewis in 2006, he returned to Nashville with "a conviction that community nourishes good and lasting artistic work — and that creative work nourishes community." Soon afterward, the non-profit Rabbit Room was born with the mission to "create and curate stories, music and works of art to nourish the life of Christ-centered communities for the life of the world." The local hutch will occupy the former WineStyles venue. Owner Jamie Farrington is a graduate of Iowa Culinary Institute, so future inklings can expect upscale nourishments.

UPS Airlines Flight 2976 crashed in Kentucky last month killing at least 14 people. It also upset dinner plans for four clients of CITYVIEW’s “Best Caterer” winner Cyd’s Catering. “We lost four meals that were to be delivered the next day. I did not realize that UPS headquarters was in Louisville, Kentucky. Two of the four packages never arrived, and the other two arrived ten days later, clearly not edible and had to be thrown out. We gladly made a new order for all four clients,” explained Cyd Koehn.

Allegiant announced new non-stop flights from DSM to Burbank and Philadelphia beginning in May.

POLITICAL MERCURY
How ‘Better Not Bitter’ Iowa author coped with the death of husband

By Douglas Burns

I’ve covered a lot of traffic-crash deaths.

“Walking down the track, picking up body parts gives you an appreciation for the power of a train,” an Ames police sergeant told me in the early 1990s in the hours after a collision, just along the Union Pacific Railroad line, in the central Iowa city that is home to Iowa State University.

Once, as a reporter for the Ames Tribune, I beat the police to a fatal crash on Highway 30 east of Ames. The woman driving had a Bud Light bottle next to her in a car that had somehow been vaulted by the collision 20 yards or more into a barren, wind-swept winter cornfield. I ran to help and saw injured and dead passengers in two vehicles. The paramedics arrived. The helicopters, too. I wrote the story and could not sleep for days. I still see the woman with the Bud Light bottle in my nightmares. ...

Hometown holidays
Residents prepare to enjoy the festivities.

By Ashley Rullestad

The calendar page has turned to November and thoughts to the holiday season. A chill is in the air, and the aroma of pies, cookies and turkey dinners waft from the kitchen. Halls are being decked, mantles decorated and mistletoe hung. Indeed, the holiday season is upon us, and how better to celebrate than with family gatherings and hometown festivities?

Uptown Wonderlights and Gingerbread Lane
During the holiday season, through Dec. 31, Uptown Ankeny, in partnership with the city of Ankeny, puts up more than 50 animated light displays in and around six blocks of S.W. Third Street and throughout the Ankeny Market and Pavilion park. This magical holiday light experience is free and open to the public and can be enjoyed on foot, by bicycle and by car each evening.
Gingerbread Lane consists of 31 houses on S.E. Richland Court, and the holiday tradition goes back more than 30 years. Richland homeowner Brooke McHose says the cul-de-sac members enjoy working together and giving back to the Ankeny community. ...
