Good morning to you!

Did you notice how many trucks with snow plows were on the road after the recent blast of winter weather? And not just the big trucks clearing the roads with your tax dollars. I am talking about the pickup trucks with blades mounted on the front and snowblowers and lots of shovels in the truck beds. I started counting how many I saw, and I lost count after several dozen.

These are the folks who dig us out from the snow and allow us to get to work, buy groceries and do all the things we need to do here in Iowa. They rely on this seasonal work for some extra dollars — and to pay off the trucks and blades. We have not had much snow in the past few years, so these guys have been eager to get out and push snow.

My dad’s gravel and excavation business was clearly seasonal here in Iowa, and the winters were used to work on equipment, bid jobs and complete other tasks. Dad started doing some snow removal, not to make money as part of their business model but simply to help some people out. One job turned into two, two into 10, and soon he had dozens of driveways and parking lots to clear out each time it snowed. And, in north central Iowa, it snowed — a lot. Dad never really liked the cold weather to begin with, and this compounded it all. He struggled to tell people no, so he just kept pushing snow. His “out” came when he started going to Arizona for the winter, which was clearly one of the main reasons he enjoyed that so much.

Dad wasn’t alone. I have talked with many people who got into the snow removal business in much the same way. All would state that, even with the heated cabs and automated equipment, it is a younger person’s game. The late nights. Early mornings. Bitter cold. And the challenge to get it all done as quickly as possible, only to do it all over again. And again. And again. And, quite often, to also work a full-time job and keep up with the family commitments during the holiday season.

So, the next time you see these folks doing snow removal, tell them thank you for digging us out and keeping the wheels turning here in Iowa. And, remind them that Arizona is way too hot.

Have a thoughtful Thursday, and thanks for reading.

The latest beef with Big Beef
Tyson announced it will close its Lexington, Nebraska, processing plant for beef due to the smallest cattle inventories in 70 years. That takes 3,200 jobs down. It also slowed down its Amarillo plant, laying off another 1,700. That makes sense on paper but, because the USDA accused the big four beef processors of manipulating the price of beef, this is a bad look for Tyson. As reported here previously, Omaha Steaks is predicting $10/pound burger prices by 2026, and they are increasing their sales of chicken.

Arby's is a Texas born and headquartered fast food chain that has always been mostly about beef. They are now advertising a two for $6 new "steak nuggets" sandwich that has garnered rave critical reviews for a fast food product. The Washington Post's restaurant critic called them “as close to real BBQ as fast food gets.” Then the Post announced its restaurant critic would no longer be anonymous.

BUSINESS FEATURE
The business of pop-ups

By Lindsey Giardino

Pop-ups may look effortless — a cute booth, a friendly maker, a handful of products inviting you in — but there is so much more behind every display. Across the Des Moines metro, small-business owners are using pop-ups not just to sell but to connect and bring their brands to life in ways the digital world can’t always match. Three local entrepreneurs share how pop-ups are doing just that.

Macrame by Jess
For Jessica Cue, the face behind Macrame by Jess, the world of pop-ups began with inspiration. She watched other makers show up at events, share their work and connect with people face to face. ...

Stewart keeps busy helping others
No better time than today to “dive in,” he says.

By Joe Baumgarten

Bob Stewart is a busy guy. But, when you meet him, you’ll quickly see that he’s busy helping others, not himself. Hang around and you’re likely to get “Bobbed,” which is what his friends call being asked by Stewart to lend a hand in one of his many service projects. They also say it is almost impossible to say no.

Part of Stewart’s success comes from his warm and engaging personality. He’s like a magnet, drawing people to him because you just want to help him. He’s also a master organizer. Once he spots a need, he will create all the necessary infrastructure to fill it, whether it’s a location, a sponsor, a donor, or an inside contact. In true “if you build it, they will come” style, Bob has volunteers lined up to support his projects. ...

1969: Police kill two members of the Black Panther Party. Black Panthers Fred Hampton, 21, and Mark Clark, 22, are gunned down by 14 police officers as they lie sleeping in their Chicago, Illinois, apartment. About a hundred bullets had been fired in what police described as a fierce gun battle with members of the Black Panther Party. However, ballistics experts later determined that only one of those bullets came from the Panthers’ side. In addition, the “bullet holes” in the front door of the apartment, which police pointed to as evidence that the Panthers had been shooting from within the apartment, were actually nail holes created by police in an attempt to cover up the attack. Four other Black Panthers were wounded in the raid, as well as two police officers. ... READ MORE
