Good morning to you!

Welcome to the Friday mailbag where you will find some of the comments, questions and ideas sent recently by readers of this newsletter or our publications. They are edited for space and clarity.

“I was curious, too, on how the Etch A Sketch worked (The magic screen, Nov. 18, 2025). I took it apart to satisfy my curiosity and discovered the mechanics. But, I had created another problem; I couldn't tell my parents that I had purposely 'broken' my toy! So, I was without an Etch A Sketch until one of my siblings received a new one as a gift.” - Myrna

Blessed are the curious, Myrna, for they shall have adventures. - Shane

“Shane, well played on your Michael Gartner piece on Bill Knapp (Gartner on Knapp, Nov. 19, 2025). Fitting tribute to all three of you.” - Rex

Thank you, Rex. Very few people can share stories like Michael Gartner. I feel fortunate to be able to lean on him from time to time. - Shane

“We moved to Des Moines in 1974 as Bill Knapp was surging to the front of the tide of community benefactors (Gartner on Knapp, Nov. 19, 2025). He was everything an effective altruist should aspire to be, and we are grateful for what he did for Drake University and the Des Moines metro.” - Edmund

I agree. He will be missed. - Shane

“Clackers (Two solid balls of tempered glass, Nov. 20, 2025)? Zonkers are what we had.” - Jeff

Zonkers were for the rich kids. - Shane

Have a fantastic Friday, and thanks for reading.

Casual dining's winners and losers
Brinker CEO Kevin Hochman won the year in casual dining, sweeping all major restaurant industry awards. Under his leadership, Chili’s dominated the casual dining world, posting a record-tying (Texas Roadhouse) 15th straight month of same store sales growth. Chili’s same store growth rose 15% in the last year while main competitors Applebee’s and Red Robin both saw same store sales decline. Hochman did that by stressing the frequent cleaning of restaurants (Remember when McDonald's was famous for that?), advertising that stressed value and also utilized social media by introducing Tik Tok-friendly new products like “Nashville Hot Mozarella,” which is super photogenic. Hochman had previously starred at Proctor & Gamble where he was credited for bringing Old Spice back from the dead and at Yum where he pushed KFC and Taco Bell to new levels of success. (Restaurant Business News, National Restaurant Association)

Fast-food traffic is down 2.3% this year, compared with a 1.6% drop for restaurants overall, according to market-research firm Black Box Intelligence.

FEATURE STORY
A new pack of Wolves

By Cyote Williams

The 2024 season was less than ideal for the Iowa Wolves. For the second season in a row, the squad only won seven games, compiling a 7-27 record in back-to-back seasons, and the third season in a row when the squad failed to hit double-digit wins. G-League teams are not all about wins and losses, though, as the main function of the organization is to develop talent for the Minnesota Timberwolves up north.

The Iowa Wolves have since seen a major shakeup. There is a new general manager in town: Josh Gershon was most recently director of basketball intelligence/assistant general manager for the Wolves. Also, Ernest Scott is out the door as head coach, replaced by new Head Coach Mahmoud Abdelfattah. We spoke with Abdelfattah to find out what he plans to do to turn the Wolves back into the winning franchise it was during its Iowa Energy days. ...

As an ambassador, David spreads awareness
Food Bank provides critical assistance.

By Jackie Wilson

During the pandemic, Teresa David and her West Des Moines neighbors gathered in their driveways to socialize. When her neighbor asked her if she wanted to help at the Food Bank of Iowa, she eagerly agreed.

“I wanted to get out of the house,” she recalls.

Yet, once she began volunteering on a regular basis, it wasn’t just to pass the time.

“I loved the people and what was going on. I kept going back,” she explains. ...
