Good morning to you!

“Oh, the weather outside is frightful. But the fire is so delightful. And since we've no place to go, Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow!”

I like the winter season. The snow. The cold temperatures. The ice. OK, maybe not the ice. And you can keep the strong winds, too. But, other than those undesirables, I do like winter.

With a winter storm on its way to Iowa, it really doesn’t matter if we like winter or not. It’s coming. But on Thanksgiving?

Having the white stuff around turkey day is rare in the Des Moines area. Anymore, having any snow in the Des Moines area seems rare.

According to www.currentresults.com, the 10-year snowfall averages in Des Moines from 2010 to 2019 during the entire month of November are .5 days and 2.2 inches.

But, it was worse when we were kids, right? A little. The 30-year snowfall averages in Des Moines during the entire month of November are 1.8 days and 2.7 inches.

And, as we know, one storm in one year can impact those average numbers a great deal.

Of course, snowfall in the Des Moines area differs greatly from snowfall in other parts of the state, regardless of the month — and especially north of Highway 20 where this kid was born, raised and introduced to a snow shovel.

Today, I look forward to moving snow — with a blade on my UTV and a snowblower. Dad always said that having the right tools for the job makes life a lot easier. Amen.

So, pass the turkey and the potatoes and the stuffing and the cranberry sauce. I am going to have my fill while enjoying time with family, and I hope you do, too. Then, I will see you outside in the snow. Hopefully.

“Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow!”

Happy Thanksgiving, and thanks for reading.

Thanksgiving Day is the No. 1 day of the year for emergency room visits in the U.S. Dumb cooking moves are the main reason: knife wounds, usually from unsharpened knives; grease fire burns; and severe overeating are the three top causes.

In a test by California Institute of Technology, more than half of American people recorded more pleasure from the same wine when they were told it was more expensive. The pleasure was genuine. When hooked up to an fMRI scanner, their brains lit up like Christmas trees, thus demonstrating a correlation between nutritional idiocy and economic idiocy.

A focus on education

By Jackie Wilson

Lorelle Jones, a dog owner “her whole life,” became president of the Des Moines Obedience Training Club two years ago. This year, the DMOTC celebrates 75 years in existence.

Her journey in the DMOTC began with her first new puppy in 1997. The breeder suggested Jones take the dog to an obedience class. At the end of 10 weeks, the puppy didn’t graduate.

“I took the class three times. I wanted to keep doing it,” she recalls. ...

’Tis the season of gratitude
Residents share stories of thankfulness.

By Jackie Wilson

This time of year encourages us to be grateful for our blessings: family, friends, health, a warm home, festive meals and gatherings, and so much more. Some find ourselves thankful for an unexpected helping hand when we most need it. From a neighbor shoveling the sidewalk to a nonprofit offering supplies and hope, we often see the spirit of kindness around us. And, some are motivated by their gratefulness to pay it forward, spreading the holiday spirit even farther.
