Woebegone Wednesday Where did the glamor go? Prix Versailles is likely the world's ultimate accolade in the design and architecture worlds. They hand out "beautiful design" awards annually across several categories. Probably their most famous award is for train stations — they are not an American organization after all. This year's winners in their "World’s Most Beautiful Passenger Stations" competition were Gadigal Station in Sydney; Mons Station in Belgium; Baiyun Station in Guangzhou, China; Saint-Denis–Pleyel Station and Villejuif–Gustave Roussy Station in France; and KAFD Station and Qasr Al Hokm Station in Riyadh. All are pretty much brand new. Gone apparently is the glamor of Grand Central Station in New York.
The U.S. fared badly across the Prix Versailles board. Our biggest successes were in: restaurants with New York's Beefbar and Miami Beach's Japón among the 16 most beautiful; museums where Omaha's fabulously remodeled Joslyn and the Cleveland Museum of Natural History rated among the top 7; airports where San Francisco and Portland were among the best six; and sports stadiums/arenas where both the Intuit Dome in Inglewood and Caesar's Superdome in New Orleans were cited among six. Only New York's The Manner made the list of 14 hotels. The U.S. was shut out completely in the college campus awards. Bet the French judges haven't seen Texas Tech, the U.S. Air Force Academy or University of Wisconsin Madison's campuses.
Where's the egg nog? Kalona Organic announced they will produce none of their prize-winning egg nog this year. Bird flu created too much uncertainty to secure enough egg contracts at reasonable prices.
