Good morning to you!

Do you ever wonder why we eat turkey on Thanksgiving? And not just a little bit of turkey. A lot. A whopping 46 million turkeys are eaten during Thanksgiving in the United States each year. This accounts for about 21% of the total turkey production in the country. Gobble on that for a moment.

But, seriously, why turkey? Why not chicken? Or beef? Or fish?

I was surprised to learn that even though turkey is the centerpiece of our Thanksgiving meals, it wasn't always this way. The first Thanksgiving in 1621, celebrated by Pilgrims and the Wampanoag tribe, probably featured venison and some type of fowl, but there is no official record of turkey being served. And, get this. The menu did include fish and other local foods that were seasonally available. So, the paintings from our history books fibbed a bit, and the folklore did, too.

Meanwhile, there is no denying the popularity of turkey today for this American holiday. It is due to three reasons, according to a story written for Texas A&M University — which must be accurate, because who knows turkeys better than Texans?

First, turkeys are large birds, which makes them suitable for feeding a large family or gathering. They are also plentiful in North America, which makes them an economical choice for big meals.

Second, turkey became popular as a holiday dish by the mid-19th century. Sarah Josepha Hale, a prominent writer of the day who penned the nursery rhyme “Mary Had a Little Lamb,” campaigned for Thanksgiving to be a national holiday and promoted turkey as the main dish in her writings. Apparently, Mary only had lamb.

And, third, you can thank Honest Abe. President Abraham Lincoln declared Thanksgiving a national holiday in 1863, further solidifying turkey's role in this American celebration. The marketing of turkey during this time also helped establish it as a Thanksgiving staple.

Today, nearly 90% of Americans include turkey in their Thanksgiving meals, including ours. Dark meat. White meat. It doesn’t matter. Most people I know, though, look forward to the side dishes more than the main meat, but that’s understandable. Meanwhile, the turkey tradition has certainly evolved, and turkey remains a symbol of the holiday, appropriately representing the abundance and gratitude we are reminded to show on Thanksgiving and every day.

Happy Thanksgiving to you all, and thank you for reading.

Sunset Lounge in Norwalk

By Jackie Wilson

While settling in at the patio at the Sunset Lounge in Norwalk, the sun was nearing the horizon, but I couldn’t see any blazing red and orange colors. Where’s the sunset? Isn’t that why it’s named Sunset Lounge?

Nope. Turns out it is named Sunset Lounge because it is located on Sunset Drive.

Sunset Lounge opened up early in February 2025. The place is advertised as an adults-only, 21-plus establishment. It has nothing against kids; however, it is a nice break from the often rambunctious, high-energy and needy vibe of children. ...

The gift of a good night’s sleep
Hardy’s mission with Sleep in Heavenly Peace

By Lindsey Giardino

For Mike Hardy, volunteering with an incredible team of people at Sleep in Heavenly Peace Warren County chapter is deeply meaningful.

Although the chapter, which provides children in need with a bed and bedding, is called the Warren County chapter, the team recently expanded to cover Madison, Marion and a portion of Dallas counties as well.

Hardy, the chapter co-president, notes the importance a bed can make.

“Kids are better all around (mental health, school, behavior, etc.) when they have a good place to sleep, and being able to help provide that is a true gift,” he says. “Seeing the parents or kids’ faces light up when they see their own bed for the first time will melt your heart every single time.” ...

FROM SPORTS ILLUSTRATED: NFL blames Fox for bad penalty call on Cowboys in win over Eagles. The Cowboys beat the Eagles on Sunday, 24-21, but it wasn’t easy. Dallas spotted Philadelphia a 21-0 lead before waking up and scoring 24 unanswered points to earn the win. But the Cowboys’ slow start can be partially attributed to one particularly bad call in the first quarter. A bad enough call that the NFL has decided to place the blame at the feet of an unexpected suspect. ... READ MORE
