Good morning to you!

Two solid balls of tempered glass, each about 2 inches in diameter, attached together with a sturdy string.

As a young boy I didn’t have any idea what this thing was, but it stayed in my toy box along with a few dozen green plastic Army men, the Barrel of Monkeys and my Evel Knievel Stunt Cycle.

“Those are Clackers,” my brother Steve explained while proceeding to bounce the balls off each other, making the “clacking” noise.

“Cool,” I sarcastically replied while opening another egg of Silly Putty. I saw zero entertainment value in these Clacker things. Steve worked to convince me otherwise, offering a few tricks he learned to do with the Clackers, distantly similar to what he could do with a yo-yo.

I wasn’t impressed, but many others apparently were. By the early 1970s, hundreds of toymakers had sold millions of clackers around the world.

If the ear-splitting sound wasn’t enough of a problem, the fact that these things would sometimes explode certainly was. Yes, explode.

In 1968, tempered glass sphere models were sold that could eventually shatter, injuring the users or others nearby. In the early 1970s, manufacturers began using polymer plastic, which reduced some of the injuries. Even so, these “clackers” still became childhood weapons of sorts. In the United States, they were eventually classed as a “mechanical hazard” and were banned in 1976. Yikes.

I don’t recall this, but Clackers apparently resurfaced in the 1990s with a new design using modern plastics that would not shatter along with two free-swinging, opposing triangles attached to a handle. The toy wouldn’t shatter, but the fun certainly did.

The set of clackers we had were the original tempered glass ones. Like many of my childhood toys, I am not sure what ever happened to them. A good guess, though, would have something to do with an explosion.

And you thought the Easy Bake Oven was dangerous?

Have a thoughtful Thursday, and thanks for reading.

Scotch and Bourbon — the divide widens. Recently we wrote how flavorings are taking over the Bourbon and Tennessee whiskey markets. Here is Scotch's reaction, by Deputy Editor Beth Squires in “Whiskey Wash”: "Scotch whisky operates under some of the most exacting laws in the spirits world. Producers can add only water and plain caramel coloring. Any other flavoring, spirit addition or sweetener, no matter how subtle, means the liquid can no longer be called scotch. It must instead be sold as a 'spirit drink' or a 'whisky liqueur.'

That does not mean Scotch is static. Innovation comes through cask finishing and production diversity and has grown rapidly in the last two decades. Distillers now experiment with wine, rum, tequila and even stout casks to develop new flavor profiles without compromising legality. Examples include Glenmorangie’s recent use of Moroccan red wine casks for its latest release, 'A Tale of Spice.' Dewar’s pushed the boundaries when it released a mezcal cask-finished blended scotch in 2020...

"While this critique mainly targets the loose definition of 'American Blended Whiskey,' the point underscores the fundamental difference (between whiskey and whisky): the Scotch identity is built on what is excluded from the bottle, while flavored whiskies thrive on what is added."

Yoni Diller is an American Italian Israeli who escaped from Hamas terrorists at the Nova Festival Oct. 7, 2023. Iowans Supporting Israel brought him to Des Moines in October. We asked him to lunch and met at Drake Diner, the site of its own senseless massacre in 1992.

Our lunch happened on the very day that Israeli hostages from Nova were finally released. Over pancakes, muffins and coffee, we talked about life-changing moments, serendipity and logotherapy. ...

Meet Jacob Smith
Making a difference in the lives of future agriculturists.

By Becky Kolosik

Growing up, Jacob Smith was an active member of the Sherman Sunbeams 4-H Club and the Newton FFA Chapter, holding leadership positions as both the chapter sentinel and president.

“Being involved in FFA as well as my family’s registered cattle and row crop operation in Newton helped shape my passion for agriculture,” he says. “I always knew I wanted a career in that field.”

Smith considered studying agricultural engineering, but, as he started taking more agriculture courses in high school, his interest shifted. By his junior year, he discovered his true passion — agricultural education and FFA — thanks in part to the encouragement of his ag ed/FFA instructor, James Horn. He chose Northwest Missouri State University to earn his degree in agricultural education with an interest in animal science. ...
