Good morning to you!

Coughing. Sneezing. Sore throats. And lots of the green apple quick step.

We have been experiencing a lot of this in the past week or two at work and at home, and I have not been able to avoid it either. Considering we are in mid-November, this stuff seems to have snuck in a bit early.

We live in a society today where most all of us want a quick fix from these problems. So, we get shots. We take pills. And we have too many surgeries.

I don’t recall my grandparents (who were born in 1896) ever going to the doctor. To be clear, in those days, it was the other way around, as the doctor came to their home. There were no 24-hour clinics to pop into. But, the doctor didn’t go to their home, at least not that I recall. I am sure it happened a time or two, but I am willing to bet most anything that I could count them on one hand.

In our home today, I would need all of my fingers and toes to count our physician visits each year — and it doesn’t seem to be slowing down with age. We are not alone. According to a 2024 report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, approximately 85.2% of adults and 95.1% of children in the U.S. had a visit with a doctor or other health care professional in the past year.

Some of you are praising those statistics, as we want to be healthy and we don’t want sickness to spread. Meanwhile, we complain about doctors when they can’t work miracles, or we sing their praises when we feel better, even though we were likely just cycling through the symptoms anyway. I knew a guy who would say that when he would take an aspirin, his headache would go away. And, he said when he didn’t take aspirin, his headache would go away. How true.

We often gripe about the cost of medicine, health care and health insurance. But, maybe if we didn’t use it so much, it wouldn’t be so expensive. The health care industry has a captive market here in America, and we keep writing the checks.

Maybe Grandma and Grandpa should have gone to the doctor more. They were certainly not pictures of health. They didn’t have gym memberships, and they were not on gluten-free diets. They did have plenty of home remedies they relied on, though, and they passed them down to their children, who then passed them on to us. (Have some to share? Send them my way, and check out these.)

My grandparents would not have been on the cover of any of today’s health magazines, but they sure seemed healthy and happy, at least to this grandson.

Have a memorable Monday, and thanks for reading.

Back to the Biz
Chi Chi’s opened its first restaurant in 20 years, in the Twin Cities where it all began. Chi-Chi’s closed down completely in 2004 after a hepatitis outbreak tied to green onions in their salsa sickened 650 people, left four dead and spurred a slew of lawsuits against the chain. Founded in 1975 by Marno McDermott and former Green Bay Packers player Max McGee, the chain once boasted more than 200 locations nationwide. Its West Des Moines store was a hot spot in the metro for a decade.

Chain gang news. McDonald's broke a long streak of flat or declining same store sales with a really good quarter report this month - up 2.4% for three months ending with September. To win back cash-strapped consumers, McDonald’s resumed advertising Extra Value Meals, running $5 and $8 combo-meal promotions. The chain also brought back wraps, pricing them at $2.99... Yum Brands announced it would sell Pizza Hut... Denny’s allowed itself to go private... Chipotle reported slumping same store sales. Analysts blamed their concentration on Gen Z diners and their relatively high prices for fast food.

FOOD DUDE
Waterfront Seafood Restaurant — a classic

By Jim Duncan

Waterfront Seafood Restaurant is a trump card Des Moines can play against similarly sized cities in a game of “Whose food scene is better?” Its 247-seat mother store in West Des Moines has been busy for so long that metro diners take it for granted. Big mistake.

Independent seafood market-restaurants are a dying species in America. Giant distributors, a metastasizing species, have scared off most everyone from opening one the last 50 years. When Joe Tess Place closed in Omaha in 2023, Waterfront became the oldest such place between Chicago and Denver. ...

A breath of fresh air

By Lindsey Giardino

Katy Downes fell in love with Winterset after regularly visiting her father, who moved to the community in 2008.

“My native Chicago felt old and dirty, and Winterset was like a needed breath of fresh air,” Downes explains.

So, in 2011, she officially made the move to town, with the added bonus of being closer to her dad.

What drew her to her home was its proximity to the square and all the festivals, as well as the classic homes that surround her. ...
