Good morning to you!

Welcome to another edition of the mailbag where you will find some of the comments, questions and ideas sent recently by readers of this newsletter or our publications. They are edited for space and clarity.

“Hi, Shane. I enjoyed reading your column about scary movies. I saw ‘The Birds’ when I was in junior high (Scary movies, Oct. 28, 2025). It was shown as an after-school movie in the school auditorium. The boys in the projection booth threw black paper airplanes at the crowd during one of the final scenes, and everyone screamed! And I remember seeing ‘The Exorcist’ when it first came to Des Moines. Angry religious people were yelling through megaphones at those of us standing in line at the theater. Last week, I blundered into one of the ‘Chainsaw’ movie reruns being shown on TV. I happened to have the closed captioning feature on. I found it ironic that the last two letters of a common cuss word were consistently blanked out, but the station had no problem showing a guy hanging on a meat hook, getting cut in two with a chainsaw! I don't mind some of what I would call scary or perhaps suspenseful movies, but I have no desire to watch horror movies full of gratuitous gore!” - Carolyn

You convinced me to watch “The Birds” again — and to make black paper airplanes. - Shane

“I love CITYVIEW's digital gift guide and the idea behind it (Digital Gift Guide, Oct. 29, 2025). Of course, for years, the small Iowa towns warned locals of the economic dangers if hometown people went to Des Moines too often to do their shopping. And now, West Des Moines has a nearly empty mall at Valley West as shoppers too often see more that costs less online.” - Mike

We all need to remember this in years ahead when we look at our property taxes. - Shane

“Good morning, Shane. Your reference to the Sears Christmas catalog reminded me of a purchase my father made from the catalog in 1955 (Digital Gift Guide, Oct. 29, 2025). He purchased a 22 caliber rifle. Quite a difference in culture.” - John

And, it wasn’t too many years ago when those same rifles and shotguns were placed in gun racks in unlocked trucks. - Shane

“Hi, Shane. Has any form of yellow pages with nothing but retailers in it ever been published or even thought of (Digital Gift Guide, Oct. 29, 2025)? Seems like seeing an item or info of specific businesses would help people who are computer shy.” - James

Believe it or not, the phone books and their yellow pages do still publish. - Shane

Have a thoughtful Thursday, and thanks for reading.

Metallic pig, metastasizing chicken alert. More than 998,000 kilograms (2.2 million pounds) of Korean barbecue pork jerky, sold across Costco and Sam's Club stores, are being recalled by South Dakota company Golden Harvest due to potential metal contamination, federal health officials confirmed last Friday.

Dave's Hot Chicken is growing faster than a modern chicken. The company began in an L.A. parking lot in 2017 and now has at least 329 stores in the U.S., Canada and the Middle East. They now sell more chicken than KFC. Their second Iowa store is taking over an Aveda salon on S.E. Delaware. There are no bones in their chickens.

FEATURE STORY
A new pack of Wolves

By Cyote Williams

The 2024 season was less than ideal for the Iowa Wolves. For the second season in a row, the squad only won seven games, compiling a 7-27 record in back-to-back seasons, and the third season in a row when the squad failed to hit double-digit wins. G-League teams are not all about wins and losses, though, as the main function of the organization is to develop talent for the Minnesota Timberwolves up north.

The Iowa Wolves have since seen a major shakeup. There is a new general manager in town: Josh Gershon was most recently director of basketball intelligence/assistant general manager for the Wolves. Also, Ernest Scott is out the door as head coach, replaced by new Head Coach Mahmoud Abdelfattah. We spoke with Abdelfattah to find out what he plans to do to turn the Wolves back into the winning franchise it was during its Iowa Energy days. ...

Johnsons have many reasons to enjoy Waukee
Special people and special place

By Lindsey Giardino

Maureen Johnson and her husband, Matthew, moved to Des Moines in fall 2019, right after college. While they enjoyed it there, they found a place they loved even more after Johnson took a new job: a teaching position in the Waukee Community School District.
“Once I started in Waukee, I fell in love with the school district and knew I wanted our future kids to go to school in this district,” Johnson says. “We then started looking for a home in Waukee.”

They found just the place and moved in February 2020.

Today, after adding two children to the family, Johnson has found even more reasons to appreciate where they live. ...

FROM SPORTS ILLUSTRATED: NFL trade deadline winners and losers. Well, that was it. The NFL trade deadline has come and gone and, a bit like Christmas as an adult, most of what you have to show for it is a slight upgrade in socks and underwear (while the kids in this metaphor, aka Eagles and Colts fans, are sprawled out in front of a brand new Sega Genesis with multiple games and the 32-bit graphics enhancer). I suppose to round out the whole analogy, Cowboys fans would be a little bit like a pack of feral cats outside that ran into the carcass of some roasted animal near the garbage with a bit of meat still on the bone which, in their world, would qualify as a strange but beautiful holiday. ...
