Back to the Biz The meals President Trump was served last week in Japan were heavily seasoned with diplomacy. On his 2019 trip to Japan, Trump was served the finest Kobe beef from Tokyo’s top steakhouse. This time, new Prime Minister Sanai Takaichi chose American beef and American rice. Japanese media were infuriated. But Takaichi also agreed to allow 75% more American rice be imported. Along with the American rice, eggplant from Nara, Takaichi’s home prefecture, was served. The New York Times quoted a Japanese official saying that Japanese rice was too subtly brilliant for Trump to appreciate.
Big shift in the Drake neighborhood? Haiku closed last month following Panka Chicken, Fong’s Pizza, La Rosa and Jethro’s, all excellent restaurants that also gave up on the Drake neighborhood north of University. Gen Z (19-29 year olds) is notoriously spending less money in restaurants and bars than all generations since WWII. Is that it? Or is the neighborhood’s commerce shifting south?
