Good morning to you!

There are two types of people in this world: those who read and those who don’t.

And when I say read, I don’t mean social media posts. I mean true reading. Books. Magazines. Newspapers. Whether you read them in print or online doesn’t matter, but the content certainly does.

Just a few decades ago, those who didn’t read watched countless hours of TV. The idiot box. The boob tube. The tell-lie-vision. Those were all common names for the TV, and for good reason. According to sott.net, some research suggests that “the TV is actually designed to send you into a trance-like state that lowers your cognitive defences against the lies the TV networks (and their corporate owners) are attempting to push on their docile audience.”

I don’t know that I would push the fears that far, but there is a reason why politicians spend so many dollars on TV advertising — and it isn’t because of a growing audience.

Much of that “dumbing down” has moved to social media, where more and more hours are wasted away. Meanwhile, those of you who are reading this are bucking the trend, and you are the smarter ones for it.

Nearly 30 years ago, Michael Gartner offered this advice to a group of young journalists: “Read. You’re going to be a crummy journalist if you don’t read. Read everything you can get your hands on. Read trash and read good stuff, and then say to yourself, ‘Why is this trash? Why is this good? What makes it good? What makes it lousy?’ Find good writing and read it. Read the articles in Sports Illustrated. Read the page-one stories in the Wall Street Journal. Read Calvin Trillin in Time magazine. Read the essays of William Allen White and E. B. White. Read anything you can get your hands on. Then analyze it. Say, ‘Why is this good? How would I have done this? How does this make me feel?’ You just can’t be a good journalist if you just don’t have insatiable curiosity and you don’t read, read, read.”

That advice has stuck with me through the years. With artificial intelligence penetrating our daily lives in more ways than we understand, seeking out and reading text written by humans will become even more important.

So, keep reading and keep seeking out more of the good writing that makes you think and less of the bad writing that doesn’t. You can decide where the Daily Umbrella and all our publications fit in that mix. I appreciate your giving us a few minutes of your days.

Have a terrific Tuesday, and, as always, I thank you for reading.

Tuesday Touts

Le Creuset turns 100 this year. The company’s enameled cast iron pots became an obsession of the rich and famous after Julia Child raved about them. Le Creuset has now added ceramics and other cheaper “entry level” products to its portfolio. Le Creuset is a model for marketing classes in the business schools because they discovered a way to make a pot that is guaranteed to last a lifetime into something that people buy over and over again. They did that simply by adding new colors (the original color is pictured) and shapes. They now produce 10,000 pots and pans a day in Fresnoy-le-Grand, France, plus ceramics in Thailand.

WSJ produced a film this year in which collectors talk about their obsessions with Le Creuset, which sells pots for up to $800 each. The interviewees sound like addicts. Altoona boasts a Le Creuset outlet store with deep discounts, often for colors that didn't sell well. I confess to buying at least one item every time I win at Prairie Meadows. Today and tomorrow, the outlet store offers an additional 35% off across the board. That is our wonder bargain of the week.

PEOPLE & PETS
Fjetland appreciates her dog’s support and companionship

By Jackie Wilson

10/1/2025

Sylvie, a miniature goldendoodle, looked longingly into my eyes as she jumped up to sit on my lap during our People and Pets interview. Since I couldn’t pet her and take notes, she settled in by my feet instead.

Owner Megan Fjetland says Sylvie is charming and likable.

“She loves everybody. She’s a cuddle bug, and she’s everyone’s best friend,” Fjetland says.

Fjetland admits that Sylvie might be a bit spoiled. She takes Sylvie to Happy Tails Dog Daycare. The daycare has hosted dog parties for her birthday. ...

Costume creations
Residents share how they add their own touches to Halloween garbs.

By Rachel Harrington

When it comes to Halloween, some people like to pull out all the stops. They turn their yards into haunted or cartoon landscapes. They carve pumpkins, bob for apples, and offer the best treats to their trick-or-treaters. And, they put their energy and holiday spirit into making sure their costumes — or their kids’ — make others “ooh” and “aah” … and perhaps shudder.

Flamingos and unicorns
The COVID season in 2020 created strange times for most people, but Shelby Warnock decided to make the most of the situation when Halloween approached.

“I found I had a lot of time on my hands, so I began looking at Pinterest boards and did a lot of Google searches. I made a grandma costume for my baby girl that year,” she recalls. ...

FROM SPORTS ILLUSTRATED: Chaotic Bears show how much they've grown with comeback Monday night win. The stage for Monday night’s late game was awfully familiar. The Bears came out of the bye week for an October road game against the Commanders—just like last year. 1968: Military announces it will send U.S. servicemen to Vietnam for second tours. U.S. Defense Department officials announce that the Army and Marines will be sending about 24,000 men back to Vietnam for involuntary second tours because of the length of the war, high turnover of personnel resulting from the one year of duty, and the tight supply of experienced soldiers. This decision had an extremely negative impact on troop morale and the combat readiness of U.S. forces elsewhere in the world as troops were transferred to meet the increased personnel requirements in Vietnam. ...
