Good morning to you!

Welcome to the Friday mailbag where you will find some of the comments, questions and ideas sent recently by readers of this newsletter or our publications. They are edited for space and clarity.

“Good to see you today, and I am glad you’re doing well recovering from your surgery (Easy peasy, Sept. 29, 2025).” - Susan

I appreciate the note. And I am getting better every day. - Shane

“I served seven years in the Iowa Army National Guard - Co. C 224th Engr in Centerville (Our National Guard, Oct. 6, 2025). The last two years of duty, I was the recruiter, after the Vietnam era ended and we no longer had a waiting list to join. I am proud of this time but often feel overlooked or looked down on for this. Thank you for your comments!” - Alan

I appreciate your service, Alan, and I appreciate you. – Shane

“Well said, my friend (Our National Guard, Oct. 6, 2025). My goal is to encourage people to stop talking and really think deeply about something. A person's inability to change his mind on something boils down to one particular human fault — pride. And it's the greatest of all sins, because pride is nothing more than selfishness to the point that one cannot admit he can be, and actually is, wrong, because pride always denies truth. Worse, far too often, our pride is built on the foundation of someone else's false outrage, designed to advance that person's career. Pride always leads to lies and broken relationships, here and above.” - Brad

Pride can certainly be dangerous. But the more we try to understand others, pride tends to at least hide its ugly head. - Shane

“Amen regarding phones (Avocado green, Oct. 7, 2025)!” - Scott

When the phone rang in my youth, my siblings and I would run to see who could answer it first. Today, it is an annoyance. I struggle to find anything else in life that changed so much in what has really been a short period of time. - Shane

“Can’t argue about that (Residents’ Choice Awards, Johnston Living, October 2025). Greenbriar had always been our favorite for more than 40 years. Sorry I didn’t vote in the poll.” - Don

Be sure to vote next year. And be sure to check out all the winners. - Shane

Have a fantastic Friday, and thanks for reading.

The Badger State embraces obesity
Wisconsin, where Iowa fans will flock Saturday for a football game in Madison, is going all-in on food obesity. Wisconsin holds the Guinness World Record for the largest cheese wheel ever made, by Steve's Cheese of Denmark, Wisconsin, in 1964 for the World Fair. It remains the largest block of cheese made in the state, though a 2018 cheeseboard weighed more in total weight. Last year, Badger woman Julie Faust raised a Guinness World Record largest tomato (11.65 pounds) ever, anywhere. Now the state’s obesity-obsessed farmers have formed the Wisconsin Giant Pumpkin Growers Association. Texas has gone another way, forming a Culinary Pumpkin Growers Association. (TWC)

Close to the better influences of the Iowa border, Holmen, Wisconsin, high schoolers have partnered with elementary students to pick apples from the school district's own orchard. Students in high school agriculture class care for the orchard throughout the year, making sure the trees can blossom. While the orchard has always intended to be an educational tool for the school district, it's also helping them save money by providing the apples in the school breakfast and lunch programs. Meet Karly Breeding
Teaches more than 20 years in her hometown

By Lindsey Giardino

Karly Breeding initially pursued a teaching career for some obvious reasons — she enjoys helping others and learning from them.
She began teaching at Winterset Elementary School in August 2005, at a time when she and her husband were expecting their first child and knew they wanted to raise their family in Winterset.

“At that time, the elementary didn’t have many teaching openings,” Breeding, a Winterset native, recalls. “It was full of veteran teachers who made an impact on me as a student. I was so excited and had a full circle experience to get to work alongside some of my favorite former teachers.” ...
