Good morning to you!

Welcome to another edition of the mailbag where you will find some of the comments, questions and ideas sent recently by readers of this newsletter or our publications. They are edited for space and clarity.

“I am praying for your speedy recovery (Easy peasy, Sept. 29, 2025). My wife had a stroke many years ago and I had trouble with ‘Why do bad things happen to good people?’ After some serious prayer, I realized ‘Jesus suffered, too.’ That answer sounds like the same message that you mentioned in your Sept. 29 column.” - George

A bit of perspective is good for all of us, I believe. - Shane

“Shane, this one goes way back, but I remember watching reruns of ‘The Munsters’ (TV show living rooms, Sept. 30, 2025). Many of the scenes were filmed while they were at their dining room table. As a kid, I loved Herman’s humor and their pet dragon, Spot, that would make an appearance behind Herman under the stairs.” - Kevin

“The Munsters” made black and white TV rock, especially after school. - Shane

“The Jetsons (TV show living rooms, Sept. 30, 2025). Didn't we all think this was what 2000s would be? Robot maid, etc. ‘Beverly Hillbillies’ - the fancy dinner room table on the pool table with the special pot sharers and the elaborate ornate matching staircases leading to the second floor. ‘Flintstones’ - dirt floor and matching rock chair and couch. ‘Frazier’ - designer furniture, million dollar view with a patio, grand piano and Martin's fabric old worn lounger.” - Rex

You touched on some great ones, Rex. The older I get, the more I understand Martin’s recliner — and the more I want a robot maid named Rosie. – Shane

“Good morning, Shane. They weren't ‘living rooms,’ but the spaces where all the action, drama and humor occurred were the ‘Cheers’ bar, the squad room of ‘Barney Miller’ and the garage of ‘Taxi’(TV show living rooms, Sept. 30, 2025). Back to the topic since it just popped in my head, the incredibly sparse lacking in warmth living room kitchen of ‘The Honeymooners.’ I think ‘The Mary Tyler Moore Show’ had two living rooms during the seasons.” - John

“The Honeymooners” did have a cold set. Maybe it was the black and white TVs, or just the simplicity of the day. And Fish still makes me smile. - Shane

Have a thoughtful Thursday, and thanks for reading.

The Food Babe and the Froot Loops
As U.S. companies continue to fret about losing junk food markets because of MAHA moms and GLP-1 drugs like Ozempic, the Italian giant Ferrero is happy to buy our junk at a discount. Ferrero, whose portfolio has long included Nutella and Tic Tacs, scooped up Blue Bunny ice cream, Keebler cookies, and Butterfinger candy bars since COVID. Now it's negotiating with Kellogg to buy Froot Loops, which learned spelling from their legal department.

Froot Loops are so notoriously junky that The Food Babe picketed Kellogg headquarters last fall with signs that read "Stop poisoning us." The Food Babe, nee Vani Hari, is a food activist with 2.3 million Instagram followers. She is a close confidante of U.S. Health and Human Service head honcho Bobby Kennedy. She also visited Capitol Hill and state legislatures this year with boxes of Froot Loops' "poison."

CENTER STAGE
Princesses, ‘Sweet Caroline’ and psychological drama

By John Busbee

A trio of diverse shows anchor the October performing arts scene in central Iowa. From fairy tale endings with many a twist to an introspective juke box musical to a richly textured story of coping with family trauma, the offerings promise rewarding live theatre experiences.

For anyone who has aged into adulthood and thought about all the fairy tale endings they had endured as a child, the Temple for Performing Arts Comedy Series offers an appealing epilogue. From their oral folk tale origins of often dark stories, Charles Perrault and the Brothers Grimm committed these tales to paper. Modern versions were more sanitized, most notably by Disney, but their appeal has spanned time. ...

Children younger than 11 may enter free of charge.

“One of the big things we are excited about is moving the stage back to the courthouse steps,” Sarah Pugh, Madison County Chamber of Commerce executive director, shares. “In the past, we’ve had two stages. One featured local performers sharing their talents, and the other stage featured paid performers providing entertainment for the community. We decided to push everything together for one big focus where entertainers won’t have to compete for sound.” ...
