This is not you grandparents' Iowa, praise the lord The Iowa Latino Restaurant Association reports that there are more than 600 Latino restaurants in Iowa. Almost all are family owned; Taco Bell, Taco John's and their imitators do not count in this category. Even in their hey days, Italian restaurants never dreamed of such numbers. In fact, they were mostly just a Des Moines phenomenon. Some small towns in Iowa today, like Columbus Junction on our last visit, might have multiple Latino restaurants and no others.
With its stock losing about 20% of its value this year, and with MAHA moms watching their kids' junk foods closer than ever, junk food behemoth Kraft Heinz fought back recently with "new ideas." One is selling their infamous mac and cheese in larger boxes that "can feed a family of five for less than $2." Another is "using better cookies and crackers" in Lunchables. These should hit supermarket shelves this autumn.
